A rule that outlived the reason everyone gives for it
Keeping fuel above a quarter tank is usually blamed on condensation, but that story is contested — the reasons that actually hold up are about choices, not water.

A fuel gauge fills the chest, drawn very large in amber orange — one open arc from E to F, crossed by three ticks at the quarter, half and three-quarter marks. The needle sits on the first one, the tick nearest E, drawn thicker and longer than the other two. No dial housing. No dashboard. No warning lamp.
Nobody put that emphasis on the tick because a gauge needs one. Somebody added a limit to an instrument that didn't come with one, and decided the needle would not cross it.
Why does the needle stop at the first tick instead of at empty?
Because the rule that matters here isn't about the tank being empty — it's about never letting it get close enough to find out what empty actually costs.
A gauge only has to report a level; the decision about where the safe zone ends belongs to the driver, not the instrument. Marking the quarter tick heavier than the others writes that decision onto the dial permanently, much like a spike that puts every receipt in the same place before you need it turns a future decision into one already made.
Is it true that running the tank low causes condensation?
Not reliably, no — that explanation gets repeated constantly and it's genuinely contested.
Water that turns up in a fuel tank comes more often from contaminated fuel at the pump, or from a cap or vent that lets rain in, than from moisture condensing out of the air inside a tank that's been left low. Condensation is the story everyone tells because it's easy to picture, not because anybody has shown it's the main cause. It deserves to be treated as doubtful, not repeated as fact.
So what's the reason that actually holds up?
Three plain ones, none of them about the tank's chemistry.
A quarter tank is never so low that a wrong turn, a closed road or traffic strands you — there's always range left for a detour you didn't plan. It also means you're never forced to fill up at whatever the one station on the road happens to be charging, because you can wait for a better price further on. Both reasons are about keeping choices open, the same margin behind leaving space for the car parked next to you rather than squeezing your own in tight.
Does anyone own the design of a fuel gauge?
No — an arc, two letters and a set of ticks is about as generic as an instrument gets, and nobody can claim it as a design.
A specific manufacturer's dial face, with its own typeface and needle shape, belongs to that manufacturer. This one doesn't copy any particular car; it's the idea of the gauge, stripped to the parts that do the reporting, which is closer to a diagram than to anybody's artwork.
Does the same rule make sense in a car with no fuel tank at all?
Yes — an electric car has no tank to condense water in, and the logic still holds, because none of the reasons that survive ever depended on fuel.
A charge kept above a similar floor still means you're never stranded by a closed road, still keeps you from paying whatever the one charger on the route happens to charge, and still leaves range for a detour. The rule was never really about petrol. It was about margin, and margin transfers to whatever the tank happens to be.
Does it matter that the usual reason turns out to be wrong?
Not much — the rule was never actually being followed for that reason, it just came with that story attached.
People kept a quarter tank because running one down felt risky long before anyone offered condensation as the explanation. The explanation can be dropped without touching the practice at all, the same way a blade gets sharpened and oiled before it goes into the shed rather than when spring arrives — the effort lands ahead of when it's needed, whatever story gets told about why.
Does it print well?
Yes — a single arc, three ticks and a needle are hard-edged shapes with nothing soft in them, which is exactly what a screen print wants.
Keep every line the same weight except the emphasised tick, and hold it to one ink against a dark ground — amber on black is close to the gauge's own colours and needs nothing else to read clearly.
