A home-made ramp — one plank, two braced offcuts, a grip strip that isn't quite parallel, and a screw not fully driven in.

What is this ramp actually bridging?
One step — the kind of small rise a young or perfectly fit animal clears without noticing, and an older or recovering one has started avoiding. The same recalibration happens off the floor as well: a shelf unit resorted by what's still within reach is the vertical version of this ramp's horizontal one.
A single step is a strange thing to build for: too short to need a proper incline worked out, too tall to just ignore. Most households solve it with whatever's in a shed or a garage rather than a bought product, because the problem showed up faster than a delivery would have.
