A zip has failed: the teeth are pulled apart at one point, and the slider that used to travel the track is gone. Across the gap, four safety pins hold the two sides together. They are evenly spaced. They all face the same way.
That evenness is the whole story. A pin jammed in sideways at 2am is a repair. Four pins set out like this are a decision.
What does this design actually show?
A garment fastened by a method other than the one it shipped with.
The zip is drawn broken rather than absent, because the point is what replaced it, not that nothing was there before. Four pins cross the opening at regular intervals, spring coils visible, each guarded point tucked in the way a pin is meant to sit against skin or cloth rather than against it.
Why does the spacing matter more than the pins?
Because spacing is a choice you make once you've decided this is permanent.
A single pin holding a gap shut is triage — you're not thinking about the next four centimetres, you're thinking about the next hour. Four pins, measured out so the gap closes evenly along its whole length, mean somebody looked at the opening, thought about how it would sit on a body, and fastened it the way they'd fasten anything meant to last. The pins aren't hiding the failure. They are the new closure.
What actually broke, and why can't it just be fixed?
The slider is missing, and a slider is not a spare-parts repair.
Zip teeth can sometimes be coaxed back together if the slider still runs the track. Once the slider itself is gone, there is nothing left to reunite the two halves — it's not a jam, it's a missing mechanism, and replacing one means unpicking the whole zip out and sewing a new one in. Four pins are a smaller job than that by an order of magnitude, and they don't require a machine.
Whose fastening method is this, and can I put a real hardware brand on it?
Nobody owns the safety pin, so there's nothing to clear.
The pin is older than the zip and outlives it in exactly this way — a mechanical fastening with no manufacturer's mark that anyone associates with one company. If a design calls for a specific hardware maker's logo stamped into the pin heads, that's a different, licensable request; drawn plain, as here, it belongs to nobody and needs nobody's permission. That's a different kind of added hardware from a row of studs set by hand, which is decorative rather than structural — these pins are load-bearing.
Does this work on something other than a jacket front?
Anywhere a garment closes along a line: a jacket front, a fly, a boot, a bag flap.
The logic doesn't change — a fastener failed, something else is now doing its job, and the new thing is arranged with the same care the old one was manufactured with. What changes is scale: four pins across a jacket read very differently from one pin holding a boot's side seam, and the design should match the width of the actual gap it's closing.
Isn't a safety pin just a stopgap until you get it properly fixed?
Sometimes. Not here.
A stopgap looks provisional — one pin, at an angle, wherever it caught. What's drawn here is already the finished state: the spacing is regular, the orientation is uniform, and there's no sign anyone is waiting on a replacement zip. Some garments get properly repaired eventually and some just keep being worn this way — the same range of outcomes a visibly mended seam sits in, where the mend itself is the ending, not a placeholder for one.
Does it print well at this scale?
Yes — the whole design is line work, which survives fabric better than shading does.
Each pin's coil and guarded point need to stay a hard outline rather than a soft gradient, or the detail fills in below the weave's floor and reads as a blur instead of four distinct pins. Charcoal behind the linework gives enough contrast that a single ink colour, or two at most, carries the whole thing without needing to shade the metal.
