The divider stopped nothing, and everyone knew it

What was the divider actually for?

To give two people the same game on one screen without either of them seeing the other's half.

Splitting the screen solved a real problem: one television, two players, one shared field that had to somehow show two separate positions in it. The line down the middle is a fairness device — each half is meant to be sealed information, visible to the person it belongs to and nobody else.

Why does the divider fail at exactly the one thing it's for?

Because it's a line on a screen, not a wall between two people.

Nothing stops a person's eyes from crossing it. The two panels sit inches apart on the same physical surface, in the same room, in the same light — the divider draws a boundary that a game can enforce in code and cannot enforce in a living room. That gap between the rule and the geometry is the whole subject of this print.

Was looking at the other half actually cheating?

By the letter of the game, yes. In practice, almost nobody treated it that way.

It required no skill and no device — just a glance a few degrees wider than the screen strictly needed. Everybody did it at some point, and everybody who was asked directly would say they hadn't. This isn't the same as choosing to watch from a chair with no controller — that's a position taken openly, from outside the game. A glance across the divider happens from inside it, controller still in your hands.

What etiquette grew up around something with no real penalty?

A set of small habits people mostly kept, and occasionally didn't.

A raised hand across the middle of the screen, a hunched shoulder turned toward your own half, a running joke about who was "looking" — small physical rituals that acknowledged the rule even while everyone knew it was unenforceable. Governing a shared resource with nothing but agreement between the people using it is the same shape of problem the controller handover solved, just without that rule's clean, visible ending point.

Why are the two panels drawn almost identical instead of clearly different?

Because that's what made the game work, and what made the glance worth taking.

If the two halves looked obviously different, there'd be nothing to gain by looking — you'd learn nothing useful from a view built for somebody else's situation. The panels stay close enough in layout that a glance across the line tells you something real: roughly where the other player stands, roughly what they're facing. The horizon and the two blocks are drawn the same on each side specifically so the small difference in the marker's position is legible at a glance.

What does the arrow actually show?

The one mark in the picture that represents a decision rather than a piece of furniture.

The horizon, the blocks, the divider itself — all fixed. The arrow starts in a panel that belongs to whoever is looking and stops on a marker that doesn't belong to them at all. It's the only line in the image that stands for a choice.

Does this need a real game's interface to make sense?

No — a horizon, two blocks and a marker are generic shapes, not any particular title's screen.

The moment a split screen starts showing recognisable interface elements — a status readout, a health bar drawn in a specific style — it starts belonging to whoever designed that screen, and that ownership is licensable the way any interface design is. Kept this plain, the drawing is about the divider and the glance, which never belonged to anyone.

Does it print well?

Yes — flat two-value vector work is close to ideal chest-print material.

Hard edges, no gradients, two colours at most across the whole image. The one thing worth protecting is the arrow's line weight against the divider's: they need to read as two different kinds of mark, not one tangle of straight lines, so the arrow wants to sit thinner and the divider bolder.

Teal ground with the panels in a darker flat tone keeps the small marker difference visible, which is where the whole print's argument lives.
