Six flat metal cans, stacked edge-on so the rims catch the light like six discs. One strap holds the stack together. Each rim carries a small label and nothing else: REEL 1, REEL 2, REEL 3, REEL 4, REEL 5, REEL 6.

That's the entire identification a film needs before anyone has watched a frame of it.

Why does a film arrive in six tins instead of one?

Because a wound reel has a physical limit long before a projector does.

Past a certain thickness a coil stops lying flat, stops surviving being carried, stops surviving being run at speed. Splitting a running time across several tins isn't a compromise on the way to something better — it's the container matching what the material can actually take. Six is what this particular length divides into once that limit is respected, not a number every film owes you.

Whoever lifts the stack learns two things before opening a single tin: how heavy it is, and how many pieces it comes in. Weight says how carefully to carry it. Count says whether all of it arrived. Neither fact needs a title attached to be useful.

Why is a number the only label a tin needs?

Because at this stage the only question a tin has to answer is where it sits in the sequence.

Whoever is handling the stack already knows which film it is — that was settled before it left the last building. What they don't automatically know, holding one tin out of six, is which one they're holding. A number answers exactly that and nothing more.

A title on the rim would be true and also useless here: it answers a question nobody in this room is asking. The tin already carries a paper band with the same logic pushed further — a position in a sequence, stated once, correctly.

What does the strap actually hold together?

Not the tins. The order they're in.

Six loose cans can be stacked in any sequence and look identical from the outside. The strap keeps them in the sequence somebody last checked, so a stack that's been carried, loaded and set down again still opens in the order it left in. Losing the strap doesn't lose the film — it loses the one piece of information that told you where reel three actually was.

Get the order wrong and the fault doesn't announce itself until a projectionist is reading it back at the rewind bench, or worse, until it's already threaded. A film that runs out of sequence isn't damaged. It's just wrong, in a way nothing about the tins themselves would tell you.

Do I need permission to print six numbered cans?

No — a numbered can is describing a shipping method, not a film.

There's no title here, no studio mark, no performer's face: nothing that belongs to anybody. The object type itself — a can, a rim label, a strap — is common property of the trade, the same way a splice belongs to nobody in particular.

The moment permission becomes real work is the moment somebody wants a specific, recognisable title stencilled on instead of a number. That's a different job, and a legitimate one, but it's a licence to go and get, not a detail to guess at. The numbered version was never waiting on anyone's sign-off, which is as much a design decision as a legal one.

Does this only work for a six-reel feature?

The count is the point that changes, not the idea.

Two tins reads as a short subject. A dozen reads as something that took real handling to get anywhere. What stays constant is the logic: a length of something too large to move as one object, broken into numbered units that only mean anything relative to each other. That logic travels well beyond a projection booth.

Isn't a blank numbered tin less interesting than something with a picture on it?

The plainness is the information, not the absence of it.

A tin decorated for an audience would be answering a question nobody handling it has yet — nobody in this room has watched anything. The rim's whole job is to be legible at a glance, from an angle, in a hurry, and a number does that better than anything with more to look at. Calling it undecorated is judging it by a job it was never doing.

Does it print well?

Very — metal edges and hard type are close to the easiest thing a print can be.

Flat rim highlights, a straight rule, condensed type for the label: none of it needs the fine detail that a fabric weave struggles with. Two inks is enough — a dull rim tone and a lighter highlight — and the strap can carry a third if the design wants the contrast.

Rust, oxide red and worn steel grey all suit it. Avoid soft gradients across the rim; a hard highlight edge reads as metal, a soft one just reads as blur.
