The design is the stencil, not the spray

What's actually printed here — the stencil or the picture it makes?

The stencil. Specifically, the card itself, drawn as the object it is rather than as the mark it was built to leave somewhere else.

That's a deliberate substitution. The sprayed result — paint through a hole, onto a wall or a shirt — is one generation removed from the tool that made it. The tool is closer to the hand: it carries the cut marks, the leftover card, the bridges, none of which survive into the spray. Printing the card prints the evidence, not the product.

Why does the bird need solid bridges to stay in one piece?

Because a closed shape has no way to stay attached to the rest of the card once its outline is cut all the way round.

Cut fully around a wing or an eye and that piece falls out, taking the hole's edge with it. The bridges are narrow strips left uncut on purpose, holding an island of card to the surrounding sheet so the stencil survives its own cutting. They're also part of why the bird reads as angular rather than curved — a bridge sits more reliably across a straight run than across a curve, so the shape that's easiest to cut and hold together is the shape with fewer curves in it.

What are the physical signs this stencil was actually used?

Two, and both are damage rather than design.

The over-cut corners are where a blade ran a fraction past the line to make sure the cut went all the way through — cardboard doesn't part cleanly at a stopped blade the way fabric does, so a short slit past each corner is close to unavoidable with a hand tool. The overspray on one edge is a separate mark: a fine crust of paint that built up where the can was held closest to the card during use. Neither is something a person cutting a stencil sets out to make.

Does this only work with a cereal box?

No — any thin printed card behaves the same way under a blade: over-cut corners, bridges across the closed shapes, the reverse still carrying whatever was printed on it originally.

The other side of that same material is a printed panel kept intact and read as a full sheet. This is the same stock turned into a tool and cut apart to make something else — the material doesn't change, only what it's asked to do.

How is this different from a print that shows the sprayed picture?

That's a picture of an image made by hand, three colour layers pulled slightly out of register — a different object with a different signature, the mis-hit of a squeegee rather than a blade.

This design skips the spray step and shows the tool instead of its result. Which one suits a given piece is a real choice: the printed picture if the finished image is the point, the stencil card itself if the method is.

Can I cut a real logo or emblem as my stencil?

A real emblem belongs to whoever drew it, so cutting somebody else's mark into a stencil and printing it raises the same licensing question as reproducing it any other way — ask first if a specific one matters to you.

An invented shape carries the technique without the paperwork, and a graphic built for a hard edge and a small palette is exactly the kind of source material a stencil cuts well from, real or not.

Does it print well?

Yes — the whole image is hard-edged shapes and flat fills, close to the easiest thing a garment print can reproduce. Two colours, at most three: the card's own printed colour, the garment colour showing through the holes, and a single dark shadow line. No gradient anywhere, and the over-cut corners print as crisp short lines rather than blurring, because they're drawn as deliberate marks rather than as soft damage.
