The line lands before anyone says it

A subtitle timed exactly to the spoken word arrives too late to work. This is the diagram of the fix.

Why does a subtitle need to arrive early?

Because reading is slower than hearing.

A spoken line lands the instant it's spoken — the ear does no real processing, meaning arrives with the sound. Text has to be seen, then parsed, then understood, and that chain takes measurable time even for a fast reader. Time a subtitle to start exactly when the voice does, and the reader is still three words into decoding it when the delivery already landed.

Move the subtitle a handful of frames earlier and the two finish at roughly the same moment. The diagram's drop lines are drawn at a fixed length for that reason — the lead is supposed to hold steady, not get reset by guesswork on every line.

What happens if the gap is wrong?

Two failures, in opposite directions.

Too little lead and the reader is still catching up when the punchline plays underneath — the one word doing the work gets buried under the three ahead of it. Too much lead and the joke shows up on the page well before the voice gets there, so it lands twice: once read, once, weaker, when finally heard. Both mistakes are common, and both are usually invisible to whoever made them, because they already knew the line before they timed it.

Who decides how far ahead?

Whoever's sitting with the waveform, nudging one block at a time.

There's no formula that spits out a universal number — a slow, deliberate line tolerates less lead than a rapid exchange, and a visual gag runs on different timing again from a spoken one. So the number gets set by ear, block by block, against a scrubbed-back audio track, and checked by watching the result at full speed rather than trusting the ruler. The work rarely gets a credit of its own; it just shows up as a file that plays cleanly, the same quiet decision recorded the way a repaired file logs its own fix in the name it's saved under.

Does the idea work outside of dialogue?

The same offset problem shows up wherever a translation has to keep pace with a performance rather than a page — a sign gag, a background joke, an aside nobody planned to subtitle at all. It's a close cousin of the choice behind a typeset sound effect, redrawn to match the original's hand rather than pasted over it: both are about arriving at the right moment, in the right shape, without the reader noticing the work it took. The same instinct leaves a scan's gutter shadow rather than painting it out — getting the timing right is real, unglamorous labour, and it happens whether or not anyone notices it went well.

Can this reproduce a real broadcast's actual timing?

If a specific timing file is the point, that belongs to whoever holds the rights to the original — the audio, the translation and the timing decisions are all somebody's work, and licensing that work is how the timing gets used legitimately.

The diagram on this shirt doesn't reproduce any of it. It draws the technique — offset blocks and drop lines, built from invented rectangles — and the technique belongs to nobody in particular. Anyone who has timed a line early has used it.

Does it print well?

Yes, cleanly — the whole design is flat rectangles and thin rules, nothing that leans on a gradient surviving fabric.

Two inks carry it: one pale block colour and one saturated accent, both flat with hard edges. Navy or black cotton reads well, since the pale row needs real contrast to sit forward against the blue. Keep the drop lines fine but not hairline-thin — much under a point and a half of print width and they break up on the weave, which undoes the one detail the whole design depends on.
