The kettle goes on twice, and the first boil makes no tea

Nothing has gone into the pot yet. The pour is the biggest thing on the shirt, and it's the part most people skip.
Why does the water get poured away before any tea is made?
Because that water was never there to make tea — it was there to bring the china up to temperature, and once it's done that job, its job is finished.
Cold ceramic pulls heat out of whatever's poured into it. Pour straight onto tea leaves in a cold pot and some of the water's heat goes into warming the china instead of the leaves, at the one moment the leaves need all of it. Warm the pot first and throw that water away, and the second water — the one with the tea in it — meets china that's already at temperature and spends its heat entirely on the leaves. One pour is spent on the pot. The other is the actual drink.
Why is the discarded water the biggest gesture in the design, not the pot itself?
Because it's the part of the process that looks like waste and isn't, and a design that hid it would be hiding the one idea worth having.
A teapot sitting on a shelf tells you nothing about how it's used. A teapot caught mid-pour, water going down a drain instead of into a cup, raises the question on its own — why throw water away on purpose? Answering that is the whole point of the print. Put the empty pour at the centre of the frame and the mechanism explains itself before anyone reads a word about it.
Whose permission do you need to print a habit like this?
Nobody's — warming a pot before use isn't a technique any household, brand or region owns, and no name or face is attached to it here. It's shared practice, the same way a knot or a fold is shared practice.
What would need clearing is a specific maker's teapot design, a printed pattern on the china, or a caddy carrying somebody's brand — style itself has no owner, but an actual design does, and a real one is worth a licence rather than an invented substitute wearing its shape.
Does the reason for this still hold, or is it left over from somewhere else?
It still holds, which sets it apart from a fair number of inherited household standards — this isn't a rule that outlived its cause. Cold ceramic pulling heat from hot water is simple physics, true of every pot ever made, and nothing about kettles or china has changed enough to retire it.
That distinction matters, because plenty of household habits didn't survive their own reason — ironing a tea towel used to stand in for a sterilising step boiling hadn't quite finished, and the reason left long before the habit did. Nobody has to make that argument here. The china hasn't changed either.
Does this work for a different drink or a different kind of pot?
Yes — anything brewed or poured into a vessel that holds its own temperature runs into the identical problem, and some households solve it with the same move under a different name.
A cafetière, a stoneware jug for coffee, even a flask left in a cold car all lose heat to the container before they lose it to the air. The brass weights on a kitchen scale answer a different kitchen problem the same way — an old solution that keeps being right because the physics underneath it hasn't moved.
Isn't this just an extra step for people with time to spare?
It reads that way until you weigh what it actually costs against what it protects, and the comparison isn't close — one kettle's worth of water and a little wasted time, against tea made at a lower temperature than it should have had for its entire time in the pot.
This isn't a good set kept for visitors and otherwise left in the cabinet — the warming happens on an ordinary day, every day, whether or not anyone else is there to notice. The cost is paid once, briefly. What it protects is every cup that pot goes on to make.
Does it print well?
Yes — a single ceramic object with a clean silhouette and one strong diagonal, the arc of falling water, is close to ideal for a print: flat colour, hard edges, nothing fine to lose in the weave.
Two or three inks do it — a warm brown for the pot, dusty blue for the water and steam, and the garment itself standing in for the sink. Keep the water's edge crisp rather than soft; a blurred arc reads as a smear, and the whole point of the image is that the pour is deliberate.
