Ten seconds to get into your own photograph

The design isn't a photograph. It's the route somebody ran to get into one.

Why is there a gap in the back row?

Because whoever set the timer isn't standing in the group yet.

Every other camera problem gets solved by the person holding the camera. This one can't be — the one operating the shutter is also the one who has to appear in front of it, and for a few seconds those are two different jobs happening in two different places. Most family archives quietly record this same asymmetry: whoever usually took the pictures ends up in almost none of them. A timer photograph is the rare exception, and only because somebody was willing to run for it.

Why do the marks along the path get further apart?

Because a person starting from a stop accelerates, and an accurate plan has to show that.

Nobody sprints from the first instant. The first step off the shutter is short, cautious, still half-checking that the timer actually started. By the third or fourth step it's a proper run, and the distance covered in each remaining second grows. Five dots spaced wider and wider is the whole shape of that: not a straight line at constant speed, but a launch.

What decides how far the tripod sits from the group?

The number of seconds on the timer, measured against how fast a person can cover the ground.

Set the tripod too close and there's no time to get into position before the shutter fires — you arrive mid-stride, caught leaning into the frame rather than standing in it. Set it too far and the timer runs out with the gap still empty. Ten seconds was a common setting for exactly this reason: close enough to a comfortable garden's width that a fast walk, not quite a sprint, could cover it.

Do I need anyone's permission to use a family photo like this?

Only if you're using an actual photograph rather than a drawn plan like this one.

Because this design is abstracted to plain rectangles and a dotted line, there's no likeness in it for anyone to hold a claim over — it's a diagram of a moment, not a picture of specific people. A real photograph works under the ordinary rule instead: a photograph belongs to whoever took it, and with a self-timer that's usually you, even in the one shot where you're also standing in the frame. That's a different question from handing the camera to somebody else entirely and asking them to press the shutter — there, the permission runs the other way.

Does this work for two people instead of six?

The shape holds at any size — one gap, one runner, one run.

A couple leaves the same kind of space in a two-person frame that a family does in a six-person one, and the design scales down cleanly: a shorter path, fewer marks, the same widening interval. What doesn't change is the basic trade a self-timer always makes — somebody spends the picture's first few seconds absent from it, on purpose, so they can be present for the rest.

Isn't this just a phone's selfie timer?

Not quite the same problem, because a phone timer usually doesn't ask anyone to go anywhere.

A phone propped on a shelf photographs whoever is already standing near it, arm's length away. A tripod set across a garden asks someone to cover real ground, arrive, and settle into a specific gap before the count runs out — closer to the coordination problem a whole group photograph already is than to a held-out arm. The run is the difference. Nothing about a phone on a shelf requires one.

Does it print well?

Yes — a flat plan drawn in clean lines is close to ideal for fabric.

There's no gradient anywhere in it: hard-edged rectangles, a solid triangle, dots and a thin dotted line, all single flat shapes with nothing soft to lose in the weave. Forest green or a similar dark ground works well because the pale lines read as drawn-on rather than printed-over. One or two inks covers the whole thing — a light line colour against the dark base, with the marks along the path picked out slightly brighter if a second ink is used at all.
