The same name, written three times, each one faster
One hand writes the same four letters three times, each pass quicker than the last, until the strokes merge into almost one gesture — and it's still the same name.

Nobody swapped styles between the three. The hand just went faster.
Why does the same name look this different written at different speeds?
Because speed doesn't just make writing smaller or messier — it changes which strokes survive.
A hand under no time pressure closes every counter, finishes every terminal, keeps every letter separate from its neighbour. Push the same hand faster and strokes that used to be two movements become one: a letter's exit stroke and the next letter's entry merge because stopping between them costs time the hand no longer has. Nothing about the letterforms changed on purpose — the hand is still trying to write the same name — but what it produces looks like a different level of distortion at every speed.
Is this the same thing as a tag, a throw-up and a piece?
No — that's a different axis, and it's worth keeping the two apart.
Tag, throw-up and piece are three separate formats, each with its own time budget, colour count and typical size — a throw-up isn't a fast tag, it's a different tool built for a different amount of time. What's shown here happens inside a single one of those formats: the same hand, writing the same name in the same rough size, chooses to go faster or slower within it. Speed here is continuous, not a set of three fixed tiers — a hand can sit anywhere along it, not just at three stops.
What a hand keeps when it goes faster, and what it drops
The features that survive fastest writing are the ones that carry identity rather than decoration — a signature curve on one letter, a consistent angle the whole name leans at, the relative height between letters. What drops first is anything that exists only to be legible to a stranger: a closed counter that could stay open, a serif that could be a straight stroke, a gap between two letters that could merge into one continuous line. A practised hand isn't writing worse at speed. It's writing a version that keeps what it needs and sheds what it doesn't.
Can somebody who doesn't know the name read the fast version?
Not reliably, and that's a side effect rather than the goal.
The fast version isn't designed to be unreadable — it's designed to be fast, and unreadability to a stranger is what happens on the way there. Somebody who already knows the name can usually still follow it, because they're matching the shape against something they recognise rather than parsing letters cold. Somebody who doesn't know it is looking at a gesture that used to be four letters and now reads mostly as one.
Does this only work for short names?
It works better for short ones, because there's less to compress before the whole thing collapses into one shape.
A longer name pushed through the same three speeds has further to travel before it becomes unreadable even to someone who knows it — there's simply more material for strokes to merge into before the identity gets lost. A four-letter name reaches "barely recoverable" faster than an eight-letter one does, which is part of why short names are the ones usually chosen for this kind of demonstration in the first place. A gradient loaded onto the first letter survives the same compression a little longer than the rest of the name, because it's the part built to be recognised on the least information.
Who owns a hand written at speed like this?
The person whose hand it is — speed doesn't change who wrote it, only how it looks.
Painting something illegally doesn't remove the painter's copyright in it, and VARA — the Visual Artists Rights Act, a 1990 US federal law — protects a work of "recognized stature" from destruction and its artist's right to be named, even on property they didn't own. At 5Pointz in New York the walls were whitewashed with no notice in November 2013, and a jury found in November 2017 that this violated VARA, awarding about $6.7 million to 21 artists on appeal.
What speed changes about that ownership, and what it doesn't
Nothing about who owns it. A letterform convention — closing a counter, merging two strokes, leaning
a whole name at one angle — is not ownable by anybody, at any speed. What belongs to somebody is
their own alphabet, drawn in their own hand. DREV is invented for this shirt, so no hand and no
name is being taken from anyone.
Does it print well?
Yes, across all three speeds, for the same underlying reason.
Each pass is one flat colour with hard edges — dense black on bone — so the print doesn't have to resolve any tone the fabric would lose; it only has to hold a line. The fast version, counterintuitively, is the easiest of the three: fewer separate strokes, fewer small enclosed shapes, less fine detail for the weave to fill in.
