A squeak means the metal's already been dry for a while

Oil goes on a hinge that isn't making a sound. By the time a hinge squeaks, the two leaves have already been grinding dry — the noise arrives late, not early.

Why oil a hinge that isn't making any noise?

Because a hinge that isn't squeaking yet isn't necessarily fine — the squeak itself is what dry metal sounds like after it's already been grinding for a while.

Two leaves turning on a pin with no film between them wear from the first turn, silently, long before the friction gets loud enough to hear. The squeak is a symptom that shows up once the wear has gone on long enough to change the sound — it's the metal telling you what's already happened, not what's about to. Oiling before that point removes that stretch of dry running from the leaves' history entirely.

What decides when it gets done, if not the sound?

A habit that runs on its own timing rather than on a complaint — some fixed point in the year, or tied to another job that's already being done nearby, so the hinge gets checked whether or not anything about it has changed.

The alternative is waiting for a signal, and a hinge doesn't give a clean one — it goes from silent to slightly stiff to audibly dry with nothing in between that announces itself. Testing a smoke alarm on the first of the month runs on the same logic from the other direction — a device that fails silently gets checked on a date nobody has to remember to set, because remembering is the part that fails first.

How much oil actually does the job here?

One drop, worked in by moving the door a few times, does more than a heavier dose left to sit and gather grit on the surface.

Too little and the film doesn't reach the whole pin; too much and what doesn't get worked in just sits there, catching dust until it turns into a paste that grinds instead of protects. A thin, worked-in film outlasts a visible bead of oil left glistening on the outside of the barrel.

Whose permission do you need to print somebody's maintenance habit?

Nobody's — oiling a hinge before it complains isn't a method anyone owns, and no name, logo or brand appears anywhere in the design.

What would need clearing is a specific manufacturer's hardware or a stamped trademark on the leaves themselves. This one is drawn as a plain, unbranded hinge for exactly that reason — the habit is universal, so the object standing in for it doesn't belong to anybody in particular.

Does the same logic apply to anything besides door hinges?

Yes — any mechanism that wears through use before it wears audibly is the same shape of problem, a lawnmower blade included.

A cylinder blade sharpened and oiled before it goes into storage for winter is dressed at a point in the year nobody particularly wants to do it, for the identical reason a hinge gets oiled before it's asked for it — the maintenance and the symptom don't arrive on the same schedule, so waiting for the symptom means waiting too long.

Isn't oiling something that's working fine just extra effort for nothing?

The effort scales the wrong way if you wait — a hinge oiled while it's still moving freely takes one drop and a few swings of the door; the same hinge left to seize takes penetrating oil, working the joint back and forth by hand, and sometimes still doesn't fully recover.

Preventing wear costs less than reversing it, and reversing dry-run wear on a pin and barrel is harder than it sounds — some of what gets ground away in that stretch doesn't come back once oil is finally added.

Does it print well?

Yes — a hinge in cutaway detail with cross-hatched shading and one clean suspended drop is exactly the kind of line work a screen print holds onto cleanly.

Two inks: brass for the metal and the oil, charcoal for the cross-hatching and the shadow beneath the pin. Keep the drop as one unbroken shape rather than breaking it into highlights — a screen print reads a clean silhouette better than a rendered one.
