The weave is a grid, and it has a resolution
Cotton jersey is made of loops, and a line thinner than the loops has nowhere to land. That's a property of cloth rather than of any printing technique — the one real floor a design has.

That photograph is about two centimetres across. On the left, a bold curve with a clean edge. On the right, a set of hairlines that arrive in pieces — present on one loop, missing on the next.
Same ink, same shirt, same moment. The difference is scale relative to the yarn.
What's actually happening?
Fabric has a texture, and that texture is a grid.
Knitted cotton is loops of yarn, and the surface it presents is bumpy at a scale you can measure. A shape that's several loops wide sits across many of them and its edge averages out into a clean line. A line that's thinner than a loop has to land somewhere — and where it lands is on top of a bump, or in a valley beside one, and the eye reads that as broken.
That's not a limitation of a technique. It's a property of the surface, and it's the closest thing to a hard floor a garment design has.
Isn't this what DPI is about?
No, and conflating them is why so much advice is confusing.
Resolution is about how much information is in the file. This is about how much detail the surface can hold, which is a completely separate ceiling and a much lower one. A perfectly sharp file still can't put a line finer than the yarn onto the cloth, because there's nothing there to put it on.
Which is why the file side is handled here and this side is a design consideration — they're different problems that happen to sound alike.
So how bold is bold enough?
Thick enough to cross several loops, which in practice means visible at arm's length.
The useful test doesn't involve measurements: look at the design at the size it'll print, from about a metre away. Anything you can still see clearly is fine. Anything that starts shimmering or looking grey — a hatch pattern, a hairline outline, tiny lettering — is at the floor.
That's also roughly the distance a shirt gets read at, so the test does double duty.
Does that rule out fine detail entirely?
No — it rules out fine detail at small size.
An engraved illustration full of hatching works beautifully as a chest print, because at that scale the hatch lines are several millimetres apart. The same illustration reduced to a pocket mark turns into a grey smudge. The detail didn't change; its relationship to the yarn did.
Which means the real decision is scale rather than style. A design that fills the print zone can carry far more detail than a small mark can, and that's the trade to think about.
What survives best?
Shapes with their own mass, and the reason is the same one.
- Solid areas — a filled silhouette has no thin parts to lose.
- Thick outlines rather than hairlines.
- Large negative space between elements, so nothing merges.
- High contrast against the garment, because low-contrast detail is the first thing the eye gives up on.
This is why so many garment traditions look the way they do — woodcut, arcade art, throw-up lettering, screen-printed band graphics. They all evolved on cloth or on cheap paper, and both have a floor.
Does the fabric weight matter?
Somewhat. Heavier and denser is a slightly finer grid.
A heavier knit has more yarn per area than a light jersey, so the surface is a bit smoother and holds a bit more detail. It's a real difference and a small one — not enough to change a design decision, but part of why a print on heavier cotton tends to look crisper.
The bigger factor is the garment colour, because contrast is what makes an edge readable in the first place.
Do I need to think about this at all?
Only when you're deciding scale, and mostly not otherwise.
The design gets composited onto the real garment before you order, which shows you the true size and lets you judge it directly rather than reasoning about yarn. If something looks fine there, it is fine.
What's worth carrying away is the concept rather than a rule: the cloth has a resolution, and it's the one ceiling that no amount of file quality raises.
