A knee wears through because one thread system in the weave gives out before the other, and what survives spanning the gap is a fine ladder — a picture of how the cloth was built, not just a hole.

That ladder is not decoration. It is what a weave looks like when you take half of it away.

What is actually left inside the hole?

Thread, spanning open space, for as long as it holds.

Woven cloth is built from two thread systems crossing each other at right angles, and they do not wear at the same rate under years of the exact fold a knee goes through every time a leg bends. One system gives out first. What is left, still bridging the gap, is the other — a fine horizontal ladder of warp thread running across where cloth used to be continuous.

Why does one system fail before the other?

Because a knee does not abrade the weave evenly — the fold concentrates stress on one direction of thread far more than the other, every single time the leg bends.

Thousands of bends compound that unevenly. The threads doing the most flexing thin, then break; the threads crossing them, doing less of the work at that exact point, keep going a while longer. The ladder is that surviving system, caught mid-collapse rather than already gone.

Why is the fabric pale in a wide zone around it, not just at the hole?

Because the wear that eventually opens a hole starts long before there is one.

Repeated friction lifts dye off the surface of the fibre gradually, the same knee catching against denim, a desk edge or a chair thousands of times before anything actually gives way. That is a different mechanism from a bleach mark, which strips dye out chemically in a single event — here the fading is mechanical and gradual, and the hole is just the point where it finally went all the way through.

Isn't this the same as jeans sold pre-ripped?

No — the difference is in where the wear lands and how irregular it is.

A factory rip is placed to look right and cut or abraded in a controlled pattern. Genuine wear lands exactly where a particular body folds a particular pair of jeans, which is rarely centred and rarely identical twice, and the surviving ladder inside it is whatever thread happened to hold on longest, not a pattern anyone chose. The two can look similar from a distance and read completely differently up close.

Whose decision is it to keep wearing them at this stage?

Entirely the wearer's — the wear itself was not a decision anyone made; continuing to wear the result is.

Nobody licenses friction. The same logic covers a hole punched into a belt by hand rather than at the factory: both are records of a body's own use of an object, made without anyone else's permission being required, because none was needed.

Does it get repaired, or does it usually just keep going?

Both happen, and the repair is its own kind of record.

Some knees at this stage get stitched shut, and the stitching is rarely matched exactly to the original cloth — closer to a seam restitched in whatever thread was on hand than to an invisible mend. Others are worn straight through the ladder stage until the hole is simply a hole, and the decision not to repair it is as real a decision as repairing it would be.

Does this print or reproduce well?

Yes, and the ladder is the part worth keeping precise — it is what separates this from a generic torn edge.

Render the surviving threads as fine, slightly irregular parallel lines rather than a solid gap, and keep the fray at the opening's edge coarser than the ladder itself; the eye reads the two textures as different things happening in the same wear event. A wide soft fade zone around the hole should stay low-contrast — it is the setup, not the subject.
