The only structural part of a book is thread
A book's cover can be replaced without touching the book at all — the sewing holding the sections together is the part that decides whether it survives.

What is this diagram actually showing?
The one part of a bound book that isn't decoration.
A cover is glued or cased on afterwards, and it can be replaced — rebinding a book means putting a new cover on the same block. The thread can't be swapped out the same way, because the thread is what's holding the sections together in the first place. This is a drawing of the part doing the actual work.
Why does the sewing matter more than the cover?
Because it decides two things nothing else about the book can: whether it opens flat, and whether it's still a book in eighty years.
Sections sewn through their fold and linked to their neighbours can flex without the back cracking, which is why a well-sewn book lies open on a table and a glued paperback doesn't. And because the thread runs through the paper rather than sitting on the surface of it, it isn't exposed to light, handling or the glue drying out — the failure modes that eventually take a cover.
What is a kettle stitch, and why is it named on the diagram?
It's the turn the thread makes at the head and tail of the back, catching the loop from the section just sewn onto the one before it.
Without that link, each section would only be attached to the thread running through its own fold — which means one broken thread frees one whole section to come loose. The kettle stitch chains each section to its neighbour, so a single break stays local instead of cascading down the back. It's a small move drawn at two points on this diagram, and it's the reason a book with a cracked thread somewhere in the middle can still hold together at both ends.
Can I put a real bindery's name on this?
The diagram itself, freely — a sewing structure is a method, and methods aren't owned by anybody. Kettle stitch, two tapes, five sections: that's how the thing is built, not somebody's design.
What is owned is a specific bindery's own printed diagram — their house drawing style, their name across the top. If a real bindery's document is the point, that's their business and the permission is part of the job. If it isn't, the invented version works fine, and it can be drawn for the exact book the wearer actually bound rather than somebody else's.
Who else would this actually mean something to?
Anybody who has bound a book by hand, or had one rebound and asked what was inside it.
That covers more people than it sounds like — sketchbooks stitched at home, a family bible sent out for repair, a thesis somebody bound themselves rather than had spiral-punched at a copy shop. The diagram doesn't need to be of a famous book. It can be the actual section count and stitch pattern of one specific, unglamorous object somebody made with their hands.
Isn't the cover the part everyone actually looks at?
It is, and that's precisely why this is worth printing rather than a photograph of a handsome cover.
A cover is what a book shows you. It's also the part that gets replaced, restyled, and rebound without the book itself changing at all. The sewing underneath doesn't announce itself to anybody — a reader can hold a book for years and never learn whether it was sewn well or badly, only whether it eventually falls apart in their hands. That gap between what's visible and what's load- bearing is a familiar shape in trades that build things meant to last, and binding has its own, specific version of it.
Does it print well?
Yes, as fine sepia line on a pale ground — that's the actual convention the drawing comes from.
The thread's path is the thing to watch: at real diagram scale it's a thin continuous line crossing itself repeatedly, and detail that fine drops below what the weave can reproduce and fills in. Section numbers and the KETTLE labels should sit larger than a real technical drawing would set them, and the thread path itself simplified to its essential crossings rather than every strand. Bone or another warm pale ground keeps the paper-and-ink relationship the diagram is drawn in.
