Blown up, a bowline becomes a diagram
One bowline drawn enormous across the chest stops reading as a knot and starts reading as a diagram of how one loop passes through another.

Why draw one knot this large instead of several small ones?
Because size is what turns a knot from a shape you recognise into a structure you can actually follow.
Small, a bowline is a familiar tangle — the eye accepts it without tracing it. Filled out to chest width, the same rope becomes legible turn by turn: where the loop forms, where the working end threads through it, where it comes back round and locks against its own standing part. Nothing about the knot changes. What changes is whether there's room to see it happening.
What does a bowline actually do that other loops don't?
Three things at once, which is rare in a knot this simple: it doesn't slip under load, it doesn't jam solid, and it comes undone afterwards.
Most fixed loops trade one of those away. A loop that won't slip usually jams once it's been under real weight, and a loop that won't jam usually creeps. A bowline holds its shape while loaded and still breaks open by hand once the load is off, which is the entire reason it's the knot sailors are taught first and the one most of them forget within a year of not needing it.
Why let the standing end run off the bottom of the print?
Because a bowline isn't a closed object — it's a loop tied into a longer rope that keeps going in both directions.
Stopping the drawing at the knot's edge would turn it into a badge, a shape with a hard boundary sealed all the way round. Letting the rope run off the hem says the opposite: this is a length of line that happens to have a loop tied in it partway along, the way it would on an actual boat, not an object that begins and ends at the knot.
Does anybody own the right to draw a bowline?
No — a knot is a sequence, not an image, and a sequence belongs to nobody.
What a specific illustrator owns is their particular rendering: this exact line weight, this exact palette, this exact way of showing the twist. Copying that drawing directly is different from drawing your own bowline from the same sequence everyone ties it in. The knot is free. One person's picture of it isn't.
Does the same treatment work for a knot other than a bowline?
For a knot with a shape simple enough to survive being read at this scale, yes.
A monkey's fist keeps its symmetry at the same huge size, because it's built from three sets of turns rather than one, which gives it a centred, even shape a bowline doesn't have. A knot with a busier structure — most hitches, most bends — starts to lose its edges blown up this large and reads better smaller, in company, the way a plate of eight keeps each one legible by giving it its own space rather than one huge frame.
Isn't one line this size just empty space with a rope in it?
The space is doing work, not standing in for missing content.
A knot this large needs the room around it to read as a single continuous shape rather than a tangle competing with a busy background. Empty ground is what lets the eye follow the rope from where it enters the loop to where it locks — fill that space with anything else and the diagram stops being readable as one line doing one thing.
Does it print well?
Yes, and the flat band construction is exactly what makes it survive at this scale.
Cream for the rope and one orange accent line following the twist hold their edges cleanly on black — a single hard line reproduces far better than a soft rendered rope would. Two inks, no shading, no gradient anywhere along the band.
