Why does a technical drawing of an impossible stair feel colder than a photograph would?

Because a technical drawing claims to be measured, and a photograph only claims to have been there.

Line weight held uniform across the whole sheet, angle labels set in a small consistent numeral, no shading beyond the strokes themselves — every convention here says this was surveyed. A photograph of an impossible staircase would read as a trick, something built for the camera and then dismantled. A drafted diagram reads as a record, which is a stranger claim to make about something that can't exist, and it's the same coldness the wider cosmic horror tradition works from, narrowed here to a single competent sheet of drafting paper.

What is actually wrong with the stair?

Two of the angle labels give the same angle a different value.

Nothing else announces it. The flight looks correct, the turns look correct, the numerals sit where a draughtsman would put them, until a reader who checks the figures against each other finds two labels disagreeing about a number that should be fixed. The drawing never points at its own error. It just contains one, quietly, for whoever bothers to add up the angles.

What makes a good one?

One contradiction, stated once, in a drawing that is otherwise flawless.

A sheet with several visible errors reads as sloppy technical drawing rather than an impossible one — the eye can't separate mistake from claim. The whole effect depends on everything else being correct: consistent stroke weight, a plausible hand for the lettering, labels placed the way a real drawing would place them. The single contradiction only lands because nothing around it gives the drawing permission to be wrong anywhere else.

What about the rights on impossible-figure drawings?

The convention itself is old and belongs to nobody. A specific famous version of it belongs to whoever drew that version.

Architects, draughtsmen and puzzle-makers have built impossible staircases, endless corridors and contradictory perspective for close to a century, and the vocabulary — the false join, the angle that reads two ways — is shared graphic language at this point. The best-known lithographs built from it are a different matter: they're the work of a named artist, and the estate that holds that artist's rights licenses it actively. A drawing that copies a famous composition is licensed work wearing an invented staircase's clothes. Drafting your own configuration — your own flight, your own turns, your own contradiction — sidesteps the question and is, if anything, more interesting to design.

Does the format work for a structure other than a staircase?

Any drawn structure that a reader can check will hold the same trick.

A corridor that's longer measured one way than the other. A bookshelf whose shelves don't add up against its own height. A floor plan of a real house with one room that doesn't reconcile with the building it's inside. The convention doesn't need stairs specifically — it needs a structure with enough implied geometry that a reader can catch it disagreeing with itself, which is the same discipline any hard-edged line drawing needs to survive on a chest.

Isn't a diagram with no colour and no monster asking a lot of a shirt?

It's asking the reader to check the numbers, which is a smaller ask than it sounds.

Most horror prints tell you what to feel immediately. This one requires someone to actually read the angle labels before the design does anything at all, which means most people who look at it see a competent technical drawing and nothing more, and the ones who check get the whole effect. That's not a gap in the design; it's the coldest thing here because it withholds on purpose, and withholding on purpose is a different thing from being vague.

Does it print well?

Yes — it's uniform line work on a flat ground, close to the easiest thing fabric can hold.

Bone-white or pale grey ink on slate, charcoal or a dark navy keeps the drafting-paper feel and survives the weave the way any hard-edged linear print does. The numerals are the risk: keep them larger than a real drawing would use, or the contradiction — the entire point of the design — becomes illegible at the size a shirt actually gets read from. One ink is enough. A second, used only for the two disagreeing labels, is tempting and worth resisting; it turns a discovery into a hint.
