The pattern, not the sign
A neon sign starts as a full-size paper pattern with a bend path drawn on it. That document, not the glowing tube, is what a bender actually reads.

electrode positions. BEND HERE twice, in a hand. DOUBLE BACK at the sharpest turn. Laid across
the paper, one real tube, lit, following it exactly.
Everyone prints the sign. This is the document that made the sign possible.
What is a bending pattern?
A full-size drawing of the tube path, made before any glass is heated.
Neon is not extruded or moulded into shape — a length of glass tubing is heated section by section over a torch until it softens, then bent by hand or over formers while the bender works from a paper pattern pinned flat on the bench. The pattern is drawn at the sign's actual size, because a bend judged from a scaled-down drawing comes out wrong. Every curve, every straight run, every electrode position is fixed on that sheet before the torch is lit.
Why does DOUBLE BACK matter more than the glow?
Because it is an instruction one bender leaves for the next set of hands.
A tight reversal in a tube path is the hardest move in the craft — the glass has to soften evenly
through the bend or it collapses, and there isn't a second attempt once it's cooled. DOUBLE BACK
written at that point on the pattern is shorthand between people who already know what the note
means and what it costs to get wrong. The sign in a finished window shows none of this. The pattern
is where the difficulty actually lives, and it's a document, not a photograph.
What makes this print work as a design and not a diagram?
The hand marks against the drawn line.
A clean vector loop reads as decoration. The same loop with a bender's own annotation — an arrow,
a note in biro, a circle around an electrode — reads as a record of a specific job. BEND HERE
written twice rather than typeset once is the difference: it says a person stood at this bench and
marked the exact points where the glass had to move.
Why the trade over the skyline?
Because the skyline is what the sign becomes; the trade is what makes it possible at all.
The wider cyberpunk aesthetic has run through the same rain-slicked strip of tube lighting for decades, and it never once shows who bent the glass. Neon is a real craft, worked by a shrinking number of people, using torches, patterns and burns that leave marks on the benders themselves. Printing the pattern rather than the glow is the same genre pointed at the part nobody photographs.
Does this need to be a real sign?
No, and inventing the pattern is the better choice.
A real shopfront's signage is that shop's identity, sometimes trademarked, definitely not yours to print without asking. An invented pattern — a loop that doesn't spell a word, an abstract path with its own bend logic — carries the same craft honestly and answers to nobody. The interesting part of this design was never the letters it might have spelled out. It's the bend.
Does it work at a smaller scale, like a single letter or a logo mark?
Yes, and a single bent letterform is often the stronger design.
A whole word's worth of pattern gets busy fast — too many loops competing for the same chest-sized
space. One letter, or an abstract loop with two electrode marks and a single BEND HERE, keeps the
hand annotation legible and lets the one real tube laid across it do the rest of the work.
Does it print well?
Yes — it's line work with one bright accent, which is exactly what fabric handles best.
The pattern itself should stay to two or three flat tones: paper ground, a heavy dark line for the tube path, a second colour for the handwriting so it reads as a different hand from the drawn line. Flat colour with a hard edge survives the weave; a soft photographic glow does not, so the one lit tube is better rendered as a solid pink or cyan shape than as a rendered gradient.
Near-black is the correct ground — it's what the pattern would actually be photographed against on a scorched bench, and it lets that single glowing colour do all the contrast work.
