Why is the needle flat rather than round?

Because a round tool would catch on the mesh, and a net can't be mended with anything that snags.

Passing a needle through knotted twine hundreds of times a repair means the tool has to slip between loops without hooking the very thing it's meant to be fixing. Flat wood does that; a round shuttle or a metal hook doesn't, which is why the shape hasn't changed much regardless of what the rest of net-making has done. It's a tool designed entirely around what it can't afford to catch on.

Why does it carry its own twine instead of feeding from a separate spool?

Because there's nowhere on a working deck to put a spool that would stay clean, dry and untangled.

The needle is wound with twine along its own length, tip to tip, so the supply travels with the tool rather than trailing behind it as loose line. That means one hand can hold and feed the needle while the other manages the mesh, with nothing extra to keep track of and nothing else that can roll away or foul on gear underfoot.

What is the torn section actually doing in the drawing?

Showing the job the needle is mid-way through, rather than the needle on its own.

A net needle by itself is a plain wooden shape — mend nothing shown, and it reads as a tool study. Set against a tear that frays into loose ends at one end and settles into regular diamond mesh at the other, the same drawing becomes a repair in progress: the ragged end is what came in from the water, the even mesh is what the needle has already put right, and the tool sits exactly at the join between them.

Does anybody own the right to draw a mending needle or a net?

No. The tool and the technique are both centuries old and belong to the trade as a whole, not to any one maker or fishery.

What could be owned is a specific photograph of a specific net, or one illustrator's particular rendering of the tear and the mesh together. Drawing your own version from how the tool and the repair actually work carries none of that debt.

Does the same idea work for gear other than a fishing net?

For anything that's designed to be repaired in the field rather than replaced, yes.

A splice tucked and cut away to show its structure is the same principle applied to rope instead of mesh — a repair drawn mid-process rather than finished, so the method is visible rather than hidden. Both exist because the gear they fix has to keep working between one repair and the next, with nothing more than what's already on board.

Isn't a torn net a strange thing to put on a chest?

Only if the tear reads as failure rather than as work in progress, and the mesh below it settles that in the same glance.

A working net gets torn. That's what fishing does to mesh, and the regular diamond weave under the ragged edge is what tells the eye the tear is being dealt with, not ignored — the needle is present and loaded, mid repair, not set down beside a net somebody's given up on.

Does it print well?

Yes, kept to hard-edged engraving with the mesh drawn regular and the fraying kept loose but not fine.

Black for the needle and blue for the net against sand ground hold their edges cleanly. The mesh diamonds want setting larger and further apart than a real net's — fine, tight netting fills in on fabric, so the pattern is reproduced coarser and fewer than the reference, with the frayed ends kept as a handful of loose strokes rather than a dense tangle.
