The stem in the jaws is what tells you which pair to buy
A bypass pair and an anvil pair cut the same stem two different ways in this cutaway, and the state of the stem afterwards — sealed or crushed — is the whole argument for owning both.

What are these two mechanisms, and why draw them next to each other?
A bypass pair and an anvil pair, drawn at the instant of cutting so the difference shows up in the stem rather than in the tool.
Bypass secateurs work like scissors: a curved blade slides past a fixed hook, shearing the stem between two moving edges. Anvil secateurs work like a knife on a chopping board: a single blade closes onto a flat, fixed bed and the stem is cut against it rather than between two edges. Drawn apart, the two look like minor variations on the same tool. Drawn together, cutting the same stem, they turn out to be solving the problem in genuinely different ways.
Why is the left stem clean and the right one crushed?
Because a shearing cut and a chopping cut treat the tissue either side of the blade differently, and living wood notices.
A bypass blade parts the fibres with almost no compression, so the cut face is close to what a sharp knife leaves in a stem that's still growing — a wound the plant can seal over on its own. An anvil blade squeezes the stem against a fixed bed before it fully separates, which crushes the cells for a short distance either side of the cut. On dead, brittle material that doesn't matter. On green growth it leaves an opening the plant has to work harder to close.
What makes a good version of this design?
Keeping the two outcomes honestly different rather than drawing a matched pair of tidy cut ends that both look equally clean.
If both stems in the diagram end up looking the same, the whole point of showing two mechanisms is gone — the crushed fibres on the anvil side are the evidence, not a flaw in the drawing. The two halves of the composition are an argument, and the argument only works if the reader can see it in the stems without reading a caption.
Who owns the shape of a pair of secateurs?
Nobody. Bypass and anvil are mechanism types, described the same way by every toolmaker who's ever built either one — not a design either can claim.
A specific manufacturer's handle shape, its printed logo and its model name belong to that company, licensable the ordinary way if a real pair is the point of the shirt. Left generic, the cutaway stays a plain description of how two mechanisms work, which needs nobody's permission.
Is anvil pruning just the cheaper, worse version of bypass?
No — it's built for a different job, and using it on the wrong one is the commonest mistake with this tool.
Anvil secateurs are for dead wood: material with no living tissue to seal, where a crushed cut face costs nothing. Bypass secateurs are for anything still growing. Reaching for whichever pair is closer to hand rather than the right one for the stem is exactly the mistake the diagram is drawn to head off — the same logic that puts a shorter, blunter set of outer tines on a hand fork that's been worked at an angle for years rather than a defect to correct.
Does the same clean-versus-crushed distinction turn up anywhere else?
Everywhere a blade has to choose between shearing past a fixed edge and pressing onto one — loppers and hedge shears are both scaled-up bypass mechanisms, and a pair of side cutters works the anvil way for the same reason a cable needs crushing, not sealing.
It also shows up at a much finer scale in a grafted joint, where the cut has to be clean enough for two cambium layers to meet. A crushed graft cut doesn't heal; it just fails quietly, which is the same stake this diagram is making about a crushed pruning cut, only slower.
Does it print well?
Yes — two mechanisms in flat cutaway, each with a small number of hard-edged parts, sit well on fabric without needing fine detail.
Cream carries the tool bodies and the clean-cut stem on the left; red is reserved for the crushed fibres on the right, so the eye goes straight to the difference the diagram exists to show. Black ground keeps both mechanisms legible without a third colour doing any real work.
