A graft is joinery at a scale you can barely see
A whip-and-tongue graft drawn at the centre of a shirt, rootstock and scion running off opposite edges, argues that binding two plants into one is carpentry, not magic.

What is actually happening at this joint?
Two cuts are being lined up so that one very thin layer inside each stem touches the same layer in the other.
Just under the bark of any woody stem sits the cambium, a growing layer only a cell or so thick. Line the rootstock's cambium up against the scion's, hold the two together long enough, and the plant heals the join the way it would heal a wound — except the wound now belongs to two stems instead of one, and what grows across it fuses them.
Why do the cuts run at a long diagonal instead of meeting square?
Because a square cut gives the cambium the smallest possible area to touch, and a long diagonal gives it far more.
A stem is round in cross-section, so a flat cut across it exposes a thin ring where the cambium sits — barely any surface at all. Slice at a shallow angle instead and that same ring is stretched into a long oval, multiplying the contact area between the two cuts without changing either stem's diameter. The tongue cut into each face does one more job on top of that: it interlocks the two halves so they hold their alignment without a hand on them while the tape goes on.
What makes a well-tied graft worth more than a roughly bound one?
Getting the cut faces to sit flush against each other before the first turn of tape goes on, rather than relying on the tape to close a gap.
Tape can hold two aligned surfaces together; it can't pull two misaligned ones into contact, and a gap between the cuts is the single most common reason a graft fails to take. A well-made join has no visible daylight between rootstock and scion at all — the tape's job is to keep that state, not to create it.
Does grafting a named variety raise a rights question?
Yes, and it's worth naming separately from the tool itself: a plant variety with its own registered name can be somebody's property in the same way a brand name is, under plant breeders' rights, even though the technique of grafting belongs to nobody at all.
Anyone can cut a whip-and-tongue join — the diagonal cuts, the tongue, the tape are all just method, free for anyone to draw or use. What's protected is a specific named variety being propagated and sold under that name without licence, which is a different question entirely from whether the join itself can go on a shirt.
Does the same shape work for a different kind of joint?
The logic of a long diagonal over a square cut holds for anything being joined edge to edge rather than butted — a scarf joint in woodwork, a splice in rope, a lap joint in leather.
What's specific to a graft, and worth keeping if the design moves to a different subject, is that the two halves are alive and have to stay that way through the join: the cut can't be left open to the air for long, which is a constraint carpentry never has to solve. The cut that makes this join is also the reason a bypass blade is chosen over an anvil one for anything still growing — a crushed scion heals over far worse than a clean one.
Isn't this too technical to actually mean anything on a shirt?
That's a fair worry about a lot of diagrams, but a graft has an advantage most technical drawings don't: you can see the two plants becoming one without needing the biology explained first.
The tongue interlocking, the tape spiralling over the join, one stem clearly continuing into another — the mechanism reads as a picture before it reads as a lesson. An espaliered tree drawn flat against its own symmetry works the same way: the result of years of technique, shown as a single clear shape rather than explained.
Does it print well?
Yes — the diagonal cuts and the spiral of tape are strong linear shapes that hold up well reduced to flat colour.
Green for the living wood either side of the join keeps rootstock and scion readable as separate stems even where they touch; charcoal carries the tape spiral and the cut lines. Keep the tongue cut visible as a distinct notch rather than folding it into the diagonal — it's the one detail doing real explanatory work, and it's easy to lose if the two cuts are simplified together.
