A container's size came first; the world got built to fit
Every shipping container is the same fixed size not because of what's inside it, but because a crane, a lorry bed and a ship's hold were all built to match it afterwards.

What is this stack actually showing?
A container yard, reduced to the one fact that makes it work: every box is identical.
Six wide and five high, in three colours standing in for three different owners, with a handful of codes lettered onto the ones near enough to read. The gaps at the top aren't a mistake in the drawing — a stack this size is never actually complete, because boxes are always coming off the top before the bottom catches up.
Why is a container this exact size, and not whatever suited the cargo inside it?
Because the size was agreed before most of what fills a container today existed, and everything downstream of it was built to match.
A container isn't sized for what it carries. It's sized to fit a crane's spreader, a lorry bed's locking points, a rail wagon's deck and a ship's cell guides — all of which were then built to that one figure, in that order. That makes it a rare kind of object: usually a standard follows a practice that already exists. Here the standard came first, and the ports, ships and roads were reshaped around it afterwards.
What decides whether a print like this reads as a real yard or as a generic box pile?
The owner codes, mostly, and how many of the boxes actually carry one.
A stack where every box is blank reads as shapes. Letter three or four of them the way this one does — a code on the box, not a caption beside it — and it starts reading as a real yard with real owners moving real boxes through it, the same difference a plate stencilled with a working load figure makes on a crane's jib against one drawn with nothing written on it at all.
Can I put a real shipping line's colours or a real container's code on this?
The size and the shape, yes, without asking anybody — a fixed volume everyone agreed to isn't owned by whichever company happens to paint boxes that colour this year.
What is owned is the specific combination: a real line's house colours together with their name, or a real container's actual registration code, identifies an actual box in an actual company's fleet — licensable the ordinary way if a real line is the point of the shirt. The three codes on this print are invented, in the right format but attached to nobody, the same idea that keeps a boat's own registration off a shirt unless it's the wearer's own boat — a specific code names a specific thing, not a colour of paint.
Does a stack like this work for something other than a working port?
Yes — for anyone whose work runs through containers rather than around them, and for anyone who's shipped a household inside one.
A logistics worker, somebody who's spent years directing a crane driver across a yard floor by radio, or somebody who moved their whole life across an ocean in one box all have a specific, non-decorative relationship with a stack like this that a photograph of a harbour never earns.
Isn't a grid of identical rectangles just a pattern, whatever colours you give it?
That's true of a grid where nothing else is doing any work, and it isn't true here.
The gaps in the top row are the tell — a working stack doesn't sit finished for long, because boxes are constantly moving through it. Take the gaps out and it reads as wallpaper. Leave them in and it reads as a yard on an ordinary shift, mid-afternoon, which is the more interesting picture.
Does it print well?
Yes, kept to three flat colours with a hard edge at every box.
Deep red, blue and cream against a washed grey ground is a genuinely short palette, and each box's edge wants staying a hard line rather than a shadow — flat colour with hard edges is what survives the weave; a soft drop shadow under every box would turn to mud at this density. The owner codes are the fine detail and want setting bold enough to read from across a room, not from close up.
