Stage weights get dragged, dropped and stacked for decades, so the mass is cast into the face of every one rather than printed on — a label would be gone within a season.

What is a stage weight?

A cast iron block, made in a small set of standard sizes, used wherever something on a stage needs mass added to it rather than fixed down.

They load out counterweight systems, they sit inside the base of a freestanding flat to stop it tipping, they pin down the foot of a cloth so a draught doesn't move it mid-scene. The same object does several different jobs because the job underneath is always the same: adding a known amount of dead weight exactly where it's needed, and taking it away again just as easily.

Why is the mass cast into the face instead of printed or stamped on afterwards?

Because a sticker comes off, and this weight is going to be dragged, dropped, stacked and kicked across a stage floor for longer than most of the people using it will be doing the job.

A cast figure is part of the iron itself, made at the same moment as the object, in the same material. There's no surface for it to peel away from, because it was never applied to a surface — it is the surface. That's also why the handle slot runs straight through the middle rather than being a bolted-on grip: a fitting that could fail is a bad idea on something meant to be carried up a ladder one-handed, the same reasoning behind a shackle's rating only meaning anything once it's stamped into the metal itself.

What makes a good drawing of a stack like this?

Letting it lean.

A perfectly upright column of identical rectangles reads as a diagram of a stack, not as a stack. Real ones lean, because the floor isn't perfectly flat and the weights aren't perfectly square, and the honest version overhangs slightly at the top the way a real pile does right before somebody straightens it. The handle slot should read as a clean cut-through, not a shaded hollow — it's a hole, not a dent.

Who owns the number 14 or the shape of a stage weight?

Nobody. A cast mass and a slotted rectangle are both generic — there's no design right in a number or in a block shape that any foundry could reasonably claim.

What's somebody's is a specific foundry's own casting mark, if they stamp one, or a manufacturer's model name for a particular weight range. That's licensable the ordinary way if a real one is the point. Left as a plain 14 on a plain block, the drawing describes how the object works rather than copying anyone's product.

Does this only make sense for theatre people?

Anyone who works with standard iron weight has the same relationship to it — a gym that still uses cast plates rather than the coated kind, a boat that carries pig iron as ballast, a crane operator who handles counterweight blocks all day.

The theatre version has one detail the others usually don't: it's routinely loaded to match a weight you can't see, the same way a counterweight arbor carries a load thirty feet overhead rebuilt brick by brick at head height. That link between a visible stack and an invisible load is what makes this specifically a theatre object rather than just a gym one.

Isn't a stack of plain iron blocks a strange thing to want on a shirt?

Only if plainness reads as boring, and to someone who's carried these for a living it doesn't.

The weight isn't decorative and neither is the shirt built around it — it's a recognisable object to a small number of people who've knelt down and counted a stack exactly like it, the same way a sandbag slumped over a boom base reads as a whole trade to somebody who's set one and as nothing much to anyone else.

Does it print well?

Yes — flat hard-edged blocks with a cut-through slot are simple, sturdy shapes that hold up well at any print size.

Keep every block the same flat charcoal, with no shading or gradient across the faces, so the stack reads as cast metal rather than rendered metal. The 14 should sit slightly raised in tone rather than outlined, the way a cast figure catches light differently from the flat face around it. Steel grey underneath keeps the whole thing looking like iron rather than ink.
