Where a rectangle ends and a stroke begins
A graffiti bar looks like a rectangle until you check the ends — one tapered, one cut at an angle, and a curve running its whole length that a ruler could never draw.

One thick stroke sits alone on the chest, dense black, no letter built around it. One end tapers to a point. The other is cut at a clean angle, like a blade stopped mid-stroke. Between them the stroke isn't straight — it holds a slight curve for its whole length.
Nothing else is drawn. This is the unit everything else in the alphabet gets built from.
What turns a rectangle into a bar?
Two decisions at the ends, and one along the length.
A rectangle is bounded on all four sides by the same kind of edge — square, mechanical, drawn by a tool that doesn't care where it starts or stops. A bar has a start and a finish that read differently from each other: a taper that shows the stroke thinning as it leaves, a cut that shows it stopping under pressure. Between those two ends, the outline isn't parallel. It bows, very slightly, the way a line drawn by an arm swinging from the shoulder bows even when the hand is trying to keep it straight.
Why does the curve matter more than the taper?
Because the curve is the one thing a mechanical tool can't produce by accident.
A taper can be approximated with a straightedge and some patience — narrow the last inch, done. A consistent bow along the whole length is much harder to fake without either drawing it by hand or deliberately constructing it, which is why it's the tell between a stroke that was actually written and one assembled from straight segments. Where two of these meet at a junction, the curve also has to agree on both sides of the gap, which is a harder thing to fake twice than once.
What makes one bar read as confident rather than shaky?
Consistency of weight, more than anything happening at the ends.
A stroke that holds its thickness within a narrow band from end to end reads as controlled even when the curve is pronounced. One that wanders in width — thick in the middle, pinched near an end, without that being the deliberate taper — reads as uncertain no matter how sharp the cut angle is. The ends get the attention because that's where a viewer's eye lands first, but the middle is doing the real work of holding the shape together.
Who owns the shape of a stroke?
Nobody — a letterform convention isn't ownable. A specific letter, drawn by a specific hand, is.
Painting something illegally doesn't remove the painter's copyright in it, which is easy to miss given how the practice usually gets discussed. The Visual Artists Rights Act, a 1990 amendment to US federal copyright law, protects work of "recognized stature" from destruction and protects attribution even when the work was made on somebody else's property. At 5Pointz, a set of walls was whitewashed overnight with no notice; a jury found the building's owner had violated VARA, and the case ended in an award of about $6.7 million to 21 artists, affirmed on appeal — the first time graffiti was found to have that stature at all. None of that reaches the bar itself: nobody owns the drop shadow, the bite or the hooked terminal, any more than anybody owns a serif. A specific writer's alphabet, drawn in their hand, is theirs.
Does a single bar work as a whole print, with no letter attached?
Yes — it's the part of the alphabet that was never really about spelling anything.
A bar isolated on its own is closer to a specimen than a design fragment: it shows the thing every letter in the set gets built from, the way a type specimen shows one weight of one face before any word uses it. A plain straight-letter alphabet is built from bars like this one held to a strict, even width — seeing the unit alone is seeing exactly what that discipline is disciplining.
Isn't a plain bar too simple to be a design?
Only if simple meant empty, and it doesn't here.
A single large flat shape has nowhere to hide a bad decision — the curve is either right or it isn't, the taper either reads as intentional or as an accident. A hooked terminal starts at exactly one of these ends, and every later ornament in the tradition is still answerable to the plain version underneath it. Reducing the alphabet to its smallest working part isn't the same as having nothing to say with it.
Does it print well?
Better than almost anything else in this set, and it's also the easiest place to lose the curve.
One ink, one hard edge, no gradient anywhere — a flat bar is close to the ideal case for a garment print. The risk sits entirely in the curve and the ends: soften either one in production and the bar reads as a rectangle again, a different, blunter object. Keep the taper sharp and the bow shallow but present, and the stroke survives at any size a chest print gets printed at.
