Ornament always starts at a stroke's loose end
A plain terminal picks up a foot, the foot bends into a hook, the hook curls back — a sequence nobody planned but every free stroke end in this alphabet seems to drift towards.

Four terminals in a row, same stroke, same weight — only the end changes. The first is cut flat, no ornament at all. The second grows a small square foot. The third pulls that foot into a short hook. The fourth lets the hook grow long and curl back on itself. Thin orange lines connect each version to the next, like a diagram showing where one became the other.
Nothing about the stroke itself changes across the four. Only the free end does.
Why does ornament always start at the terminal rather than somewhere else on the stroke?
Because the terminal is the only part of a stroke with nowhere to answer to.
The middle of a bar has to hold a consistent weight to sit properly against whatever it's joined to; the point where two strokes meet has to agree with a neighbour on gap and angle. A terminal has no neighbour. It's the one place a hand can add something without checking it against anything else in the letter, which is why every addition in this alphabet seems to accumulate there first.
Why does a flat cut turn into a foot, and a foot into a hook?
Because each step reads as slightly more finished than the one before it, when it's copied fast from a photograph rather than drawn from scratch.
A plain cut is the least amount of information a terminal can carry. A small square foot adds weight at the base without much extra drawing. Pulling that foot into a hook adds a curve, which reads as more confident than a straight foot even though it takes barely longer to draw. Nobody decided the sequence should run in that order — a writer copying somebody else's letter fast tends to round the sharp parts and extend the curved ones, and the next writer copying that version does it again.
Is this the same pressure that gave Latin type its serifs?
The mechanical pressure looks the same — a stroke's loose end picking up weight under repeated handling — with no claim that one tradition descends from the other.
Both are cases of a plain terminal accumulating a small addition at the end rather than in the middle, because the end is where a hand or a chisel naturally slows or catches. That's a structural similarity in how strokes behave under repetition, not a shared history, and nothing here asserts one.
What decision does a writer actually make at this point?
How far along that sequence to stop, for this particular letter, in this particular word.
A short flat cut suits a letter that already carries a shadow or an extension elsewhere — one more hook would compete with it. A long curled hook suits a letter with nothing else going on, where the terminal is doing all the work of making it feel finished. Every terminal in a word disagreeing about how far it went reads as indecision rather than variety.
Who owns a hooked terminal?
Nobody — a convention this common belongs to whoever uses it well, not to whoever used it first.
The same rule holds across the whole vocabulary: nobody owns the drop shadow, the bite or the hooked terminal, any more than anybody owns a serif. Painting something illegally doesn't remove the painter's copyright in it, either — the Visual Artists Rights Act, a 1990 amendment to US federal copyright law, has protected graffiti of "recognized stature" since the 5Pointz case, where a jury found a building owner liable for whitewashing work without notice and the artists were awarded about $6.7 million, affirmed on appeal. What's protected there is a specific letter in a specific hand. The hook itself was never anybody's to license.
Where does the sequence stop?
It doesn't, cleanly. The fourth version here — hook grown long and curled back — is common, but nothing prevents a fifth.
A letter changes the same way across repeated copies more generally, and ink's own version of this drift runs in the opposite direction — detail gets lost rather than added. A terminal is simply the smallest piece of a letter where the gain is easy to see in isolation. What holds it in check in practice is legibility: past a certain curl, the hook stops reading as part of the letter and starts reading as a separate mark.
Does it print well?
Cleanly, because every stage in the sequence is a hard-edged shape with no gradient in it.
Four terminals means four small variations in outline and nothing else — flat colour, sharp corners, no fill pattern to fight the weave. The only risk is at chest scale: a long curled hook has to stay wide enough at its thinnest point that the print doesn't lose it, which usually means drawing the curl slightly heavier than it would look on paper.
