The canvas upper is covered, seam to seam, in blue ballpoint: spirals, crosshatch, small repeated shapes, tiny stars, drawn right across the stitching without stopping for it. The rubber toecap and side wall are left bare.
In two places the ink goes darker, where the pen was running dry and got pressed harder to keep going.
What is actually drawn on this shoe?
Pattern, not a picture — shapes repeated until the whole upper is full.
There's no single image to read, no words, no letters, nothing that names anything. It's accumulation: one small mark next to another next to another, in the same pen, until the canvas runs out of empty space. The seams get drawn over rather than avoided, which is part of what makes it read as covering the object rather than decorating a section of it.
Why does the ink get darker in two places?
Because a ballpoint running low needs more pressure to lay down the same line.
As the reservoir empties, the same stroke needs harder pressure to keep the ink flowing, and that pressure shows as denser, darker patches. It's not a stylistic choice — it's the pen itself recording how much of it had already been used by the time it reached that patch of canvas, the same way an uneven hand shows up in a row of studs set one at a time rather than in anything either maker planned.
Why does that density matter?
It's the closest thing this object has to a timestamp.
A print goes down in one pass, uniform everywhere. Hand drawing in biro varies with how hard the hand pressed, how much ink was left, how tired the hand was three hundred small shapes in. Read across the whole shoe, that variation is a record of how long the drawing took and roughly the order it happened in — hours, not minutes, on an object built to be walked on the day it's finished.
Why leave the toecap and side wall bare?
Because biro doesn't take on rubber the way it takes on canvas.
Ink sits on top of a hard rubber surface instead of soaking into it, so a pen line there scuffs and flakes off within days rather than staying put. Leaving the rubber clean isn't restraint for its own sake — canvas holds the mark and rubber doesn't, so the drawing only goes where it will actually survive being worn.
Whose doodling is this, and can I put my own initials or a symbol in it?
Plain repeated shapes like these belong to whoever draws them, and there's nothing to clear.
If a design instead wants a real character, a band's logo or a specific symbol somebody recognises, that's the same licensing question as any other artwork — it belongs to whoever made it, and using it means getting it properly. A field of invented spirals and crosshatch, with no words or letters in it, carries none of that and is free to draw however the wearer likes.
Isn't it strange to spend hours on something that's about to be walked to pieces?
That's the whole trade the object is making.
A shoe is disposable in a way a t-shirt isn't — sole wear, scuffing, the elements all work on it from the first day out. Drawing across every surface of one anyway, including the parts that will scrape first, isn't a miscalculation. It's spending real time on an object with a short life on purpose, the same trade hand-painting a jacket back in household paint makes when it puts something slow and considered onto cloth that will crease and wear regardless.
Does this work on something other than shoes?
Anywhere canvas or a similarly porous surface is exposed and gets handled — a bag, a cap brim, a belt.
The shoe version is common because a shoe is worn in public and close to the ground, so the density of the drawing is visible at a glance. The same logic — pattern built up over hours, ink varying with pressure, no legible words — carries over to any surface somebody is willing to spend that long on, including a t-shirt marked up by hand, where the marks are words instead of pattern and the calculation about permanence is the same.
Does it print well as a design?
Yes, and the density is doing the work rather than any single mark.
Fine biro line reproduces well as long as it stays genuinely fine rather than getting thickened into something closer to marker — the effect depends on hundreds of small strokes reading as texture, not on any one shape being legible from a distance. A pale canvas-toned garment gives the blue the most contrast to sit against.
