What does wear like this rule out?
Ordinary walking, and running with it.
A shoe worn by a normal gait wears at the ball of the foot and the heel first, because that's where weight lands and pushes off with every step. These two soles are close to new. Whatever produced the toe damage wasn't the daily business of getting from one place to another — that would have marked the sole long before it touched the tip.
What is the toe most likely doing, worn down like this?
Making contact with something, low and repeatedly, for months — kicking, most likely, given where the wear sits and how evenly it has spread.
That is the plausible read, not a confirmed one. Nobody at home watched it happen: it built up across a term of afternoons the parent wasn't present for, one small scuff at a time, until it became a pattern instead of a mark. The shoes can describe the shape of the action. They cannot name it, and nobody is going to ask a child to account for the last few months of playground minutes and get a precise answer back.
Why does the sole staying unworn matter as much as the toe being worn?
Because it is half the evidence — it rules out the ordinary explanation before the toe wear can be read on its own terms.
If the sole and heel were worn too, the toe scuffing could just be normal wear spreading forward over time. A sole this close to new, sitting under a toe this damaged, says the two areas were produced by different activity at different rates. The unworn half of the shoe is what makes the worn half specific rather than incidental.

That design measures speed — how fast a foot outgrew the leather. This one measures location — where the wear landed and where it didn't.
A shoe worn out all over in eleven weeks is a growth rate with a number attached to it. A shoe worn only at the toe, with the rest of it intact, isn't reporting on growth at all; it's reporting on what the child was doing while the shoe still fit. Same object, two completely different kinds of evidence.
How is this different from a chair worn on one arm and not the other?
The chair's asymmetry belongs to one body sitting the same way for years; these two shoes are the opposite shape of evidence — one action, worn evenly across two feet at once.
The chair reads as a single dominant side, left arm untouched. A matching pair of scuffed toes has no dominant side to find — both feet did the same thing the same amount, which is itself part of what the wear is reporting.
Is this the same kind of report as what comes back in a lunchbox?
Related, but built up much more slowly — a lunchbox reports on one afternoon; a scuffed toe is the same afternoon repeated often enough to leave a permanent mark.

Polished leather doesn't need a photographic sheen; a single hard highlight along the vamp is enough to say "polished," and the toe patch reads best as a flat lighter grey rather than a gradient, which would blur into the black around it and lose the arc's edge.
