A fold has a shadow and a drawn line never does

A line by itself could have been drawn. That shadow could not.
Why does the shadow only run down one side of the line?
Because a fold is a ridge, not a mark, and a ridge only casts a shadow toward whichever side the scanner's light was travelling from.
Ink sits flat on paper and reflects light evenly in every direction, which is exactly why a drawn line never carries a shadow of its own. A crease is a change in the paper's height — one edge climbing away from the glass, the other dropping back toward it — and a light raking across that change lights one face of the ridge and leaves the other in its own shade. The scanner's light bar crosses the bed from one direction only, so the shade only ever falls on the side facing away from it. That is the entire mechanism, and it is also the whole reason the mark reads as a fold rather than as artwork: the asymmetry is proof that something stood up off the page.
Why is the shadow so much wider than the line itself?
Because the line is the crease's edge and the shadow is the slope leading up to it, and a slope takes up more room than an edge does.
The crease itself — the actual point where the paper folded — is thin, which is why it prints as a hairline. The paper on either side of that point is not flat; it rises and falls gradually across a much wider stretch before it settles back down. All of that gradual rise catches the light at a shallow angle and reads as tone rather than as line, which is why the shadow has to be graded and broad rather than a second hard edge. A crease this old, folded and unfolded enough times to stay visible at all, has widened that slope further still — which is also why the band here runs several times the thickness of the line rather than sitting as a thin border beside it.
Why is the line itself so straight and even?
Because a fold obeys the sheet, and a sheet folds along a straight axis almost every time it is folded by hand at all.
A hand drawing a line wanders — pressure changes, the hand slows at the ends, the line thickens and thins. A fold does not have a hand's inconsistency to inherit. Paper creased once holds a single ridge of even height along its whole length, so the mark it leaves in a scan is even too: constant weight, constant darkness, dead straight from corner to corner. That evenness is a second proof alongside the shadow — nobody drew this, and the paper itself would not let them if they tried. It is a different kind of straightness from a whole page sitting a few degrees off square, where the paper itself is undamaged and only its angle to the bed is wrong; here the paper's own surface is what has changed.
Who owns the shape of a fold?
Nobody. A crease is a property of paper under pressure, not a drawing, a photograph or anyone's design.
There is no document reproduced here, printed or otherwise — an empty sheet crossed by a mark it made itself. If a specific folded document were ever the actual point of a design — a letter, a map, something with real writing on it — whoever holds rights in that particular document could license its reproduction. A blank sheet's own crease is not that kind of object. Style has no owner. A work does.
Does the same idea work on something other than a straight fold?
Yes, on any crease with a clear direction to its light, which most single folds have.
A folded corner gives two shorter creases meeting at an angle rather than one running edge to edge. A repeatedly folded sheet — into thirds, into eighths — gives several parallel lines, each with its own shadow on the same side, which is a stronger and busier print than one crease alone. What the idea does not survive is a crumple: too many creases crossing at too many angles throws light in every direction at once, and the one-sided shadow that makes a single fold legible disappears into noise.
Isn't a straight black line on a shirt just a line, whatever caused it?
Not once the shadow is there. See what shows through a page from the sheet behind it for a mark on the same kind of empty sheet that could pass for damage instead — the difference there is what a scanner's own light does to paper it was never meant to see through, not what it does to paper standing up off its own plane. A drawn line, however carefully copied, has no physical reason to carry tone down only one side of itself. The moment that band appears, the mark stops being a line about ink and becomes a measurement of how far the paper actually rose off the glass, and by how much, and toward which side. Nothing else on the sheet competes with it, because the design leaves nothing else there to look at — one field, waiting for the light to find whatever is actually on the bed is the same restraint pointed at a different fault.
Does it print well?
Yes — one black line and one grey band, both flat, on an otherwise empty sheet.
The line wants to stay a genuinely hard edge with no softening; it is the one crisp element the whole design leans on. The band beside it is the part to watch: a grey gradient this wide can go muddy or patchy on fabric if it is built from too many steps, so it prints better reduced to a small number of flat bands stepping down from dark to nothing, rather than a true smooth blend. White or a pale, near-white base is the right ground, since the whole point is a sheet that otherwise has nothing printed on it at all. One ink for the line, one for the shadow — two, and no more than two.
