The angle a scanner turns into carelessness
A scanned page sits a few degrees off square, and the bare scanner glass at two edges prints as a hard black wedge no shadow could explain.

Nothing on the page has changed. What moved is its angle to the frame that captured it.
Why does empty scanner bed print as a black wedge?
Because a flatbed scanner records everything under the lid, and glass with nothing on it returns nothing back.
A sheet placed a few degrees off centre leaves a triangle of bare glass at two edges, and that triangle scans exactly as dark as the lid's underside — usually black rubber, sometimes a foam pad — because there is no paper there to bounce the lamp's light up into the sensor. It isn't a shadow cast by the page; it's the page's absence, recorded with the same fidelity as the page's presence. The wedge is widest where the rotation is largest, which is why it grows toward one corner and thins toward the other. The page's own edges stay crisp and straight the whole way round, which is what tells you this is a placement error and not a torn or damaged sheet — nothing about the paper itself gave way.
Does a few degrees matter that much?
On the page itself, no. On the copy of it, yes.
Nothing about the content moved. The header still says what it said, the ruled lines still run where somebody ruled them. What changed is a single number — the angle between the paper and the machine reading it — and that number is enough to make a page filled in carefully look like it was shoved through in a hurry. A reader can't tell three degrees of a stack that wasn't squared before it was fed from three degrees of carelessness. The rotation reports nothing about the document. It reports the last person who touched it, badly.
How is this different from a photograph taken at an angle?
A photograph tilts the whole world with it. A scan tilts the page and nothing else.
A poster shot from one side drags a wall, a floor and everything behind it into the same perspective, because a camera is recording a scene it stands outside of. A scanner has no outside — the sensor moves along a fixed track under a fixed sheet of glass, so whatever can go crooked is limited to what's lying on it. Everything the machine can see stays perfectly square: the glass, the lid, the block of black itself. Only the page disagrees with the frame.
What is RECEIVED doing on a page that looks like this?
Standing for the one part of the process that worked.
Somewhere upstream of the scan, a stamp went on correctly, in the right place, by somebody following a procedure. Downstream, feeding that same page into a scanner square to its own glass — a much smaller ask — didn't happen. The word survives the rotation because words don't need to be read at an angle to still say what they say. It just sits there, level in spirit if not in fact, on top of a sheet that failed a step considerably easier than the one it passed.
Who owns a rotated document?
Nobody, and the rotation is the reason why.
There's no photograph here, no letterhead, no company this names — a ruled table, a stamp reading RECEIVED, and rows too dense to read stand for the shape of a form rather than any specific one. If a real document is genuinely the point — your own paperwork, your own stamp — getting it made is a matter of using your own sheet, not somebody else's. Short of that, an invented form does the same work and clears nothing with anybody, because there is nothing here that belongs to them in the first place. Style has no owner. A work does.
Does the tilt work on something other than a form?
Anything a flatbed would plausibly be asked to copy.
A sheet scanned with something else pressed against it shows what else a scanner will record without meaning to — in that case the page behind, here the bed beneath. A photograph, a handwritten note, a printed ticket all rotate the same way and throw the same wedge, because the wedge belongs to the scanner's geometry, not to what's printed. What has to stay fixed is the machine's own straight lines — the glass edge, the lid, the block of black — so the page reads as the one thing out of true.
Does it print well?
Better than the page it depicts, if the wedges are kept as flat solid ink.
The wedge is a hard black shape with a straight edge on two sides and nothing gradual about it — exactly what a screen print wants, and nothing like the soft vignette a lazy rendering of "scanner shadow" would produce. The blacked-out rows want the same treatment: solid, not screened, so they hold their edge instead of breaking up into dots too fine for the weave. Off-white, bone or a pale warm grey all sit well under one dense black. It's a one or two-ink job, and the flatter each element stays the more the rotation itself does the work — the same discipline as a page whose ink runs out before it reaches one corner.
