Why does an engine bay read like a portrait?

Because the framing does the same job a photographer's framing does — a subject placed dead centre, evenly lit, with nothing cropped at the edges.

A portrait isn't just a picture of a face; it's a face arranged so nothing in the frame competes with it. An engine bay shot from directly above does exactly that to a straight-six: the cam cover sits in the middle, the intake runners and braided hoses fall away symmetrically on either side, and the strut brace across the top reads almost like a frame within the frame. Nobody photographs a bay this way by accident.

Why does the shot have to be square and centred?

Because an engine bay is naturally symmetrical left to right, and any angle that isn't dead-on throws that symmetry away.

A three-quarter view flattens one side of the bay against the other and turns hex fittings and looms into a jumble competing for attention. Straight down the middle, the bay's own left-right balance becomes the composition — the same reason formal portraits are shot face-on rather than in profile. Symmetry reads as deliberate, and a deliberate arrangement is what makes something look chosen rather than caught.

What makes one bay worth drawing over another?

How much of it has actually been touched.

A bay that's been cleaned, rewired and fitted with a brace and braided lines is a record of decisions made over years, the same way the car itself is a record of what its owner changed — stock and undisturbed can still carry the composition, but the print gains something wherever there's evidence of a hand in it: a strut brace that wasn't there originally, hoses replaced in a colour that matches nothing else on the car.

Can the cam cover carry a real manufacturer's marking?

Not without that manufacturer's permission — a cast badge or model code on an engine is the manufacturer's own mark, in exactly the way a workshop's own decal kit belongs to the workshop that designed it.

KX 26 on the cover here is invented specifically so the print can be worn without borrowing anybody's identity. A real code usually isn't essential to the picture anyway — most of what makes a bay recognisable is the layout and the parts, not three letters cast into one cover.

Does this suit a car that's been heavily modified?

If anything it suits a modified car better than a stock one — a strut brace, braided lines and a rewired loom are things somebody added on purpose, and a portrait gains from a subject with some character already in it.

A standard bay can still carry the composition, but the print has less to say about a part nobody has touched. What it's recording either way is a decision, not a factory spec sheet.

Isn't an engine bay too technical to read as a picture from a distance?

Not at print size, because the composition does more of the work than the mechanical detail does.

Symmetry and centring read from across a room the way a face does — the arrangement registers before any single component does. Up close, the same logic that reads a tyre-marked corner as an accumulated record rather than as noise applies here: the fittings and hoses are legible detail, not clutter, because they're arranged rather than scattered.

Does it print well?

Yes, provided the detail is simplified rather than traced exactly.

Cream and copper against a deep blue base hold well as two dominant tones with hex fittings and cast lettering picked out as small hard-edged highlights — the braided hose texture and wiring loom need to be drawn coarser than the real thing or they fill in at fabric scale and the symmetry that makes the print work gets lost under noise. Keep the strut brace and cam cover crisp; let the smaller hoses simplify first.
