Forty-eight cells, twelve across and four down. Most are plain outlines. Seventeen are filled solid, and they don't scatter evenly across the grid — they arrive in runs, three together here, five together there.

That clustering is the actual content. A random smattering would mean something different.

What is a grid like this tracking?

Which stretches of a long, ongoing story move the plot forward and which ones don't, laid out cell by cell so the pattern is visible at a glance instead of buried in a list.

Somebody went through every instalment, made a call on each one, and filled in a cell. It's a production record kept by an audience rather than a production team — close kin to the two columns of numbers that get wired together once a story's release order and its internal order come apart, except this record only cares which cells you can skip, not what order the rest go in.

Why do the filled cells cluster instead of scattering?

Because the thing they're marking has a cause, and the cause runs in stretches, not single instances.

A story that's about to catch up to its own source material slows down for a while. A production schedule that needs a breather between big arcs inserts one. Both of those produce a run of several instalments in a row, not one isolated week — so a grid built from real viewing tends to show clumps, and a grid with the same seventeen cells scattered evenly would actually be the suspicious one.

Who gets to decide what counts as one of these cells?

Whoever built the chart, and that's worth saying plainly rather than pretending the grid is official.

"Doesn't move the plot forward" is a judgment call, not a measurement — two people watching the same run can fill in different cells. The chart isn't a certificate; it's one viewer's read on the material, published so other people can argue with it or borrow it. The tier list nobody agreed with runs on the identical premise: a shape that invites disagreement is more useful than a verdict that forecloses it.

Can I use the real episode count and grid layout from a specific show?

No — the exact instalment count and the specific cells marked are tied to one production's actual release history, and that record belongs to whoever made it.

A twelve-by-four grid with a plain contrast fill is not owned by anybody; grids that log a sequence of anything — shifts, sessions, matches — use the identical logic. Round numbers and an invented cluster pattern keep the print about the idea of a pacing record rather than about one specific run.

Does this only work for episodic television?

No. Anything that arrives in a long sequence, where some instalments matter and some don't, takes this shape — a serialised podcast, a comic run with side issues, a season of patch notes, even a long project at work where some weeks were maintenance and some weren't.

The grid doesn't need the content to be fiction. It needs a sequence long enough that a newcomer benefits from being told where the slow parts are.

Isn't marking something as filler a bit dismissive of the people who made it?

It can read that way, and that's exactly why it's worth being precise about what the grid actually is: an opinion about which instalments a newcomer can skip, not a verdict on the people who produced them.

Instalments built to buy a production team more time, or to let a slower part of a story breathe, still take real work to make — the grid just isn't in the business of grading that work. It only answers one narrow question: does this move the plot. The block of text that keeps only three sentences and lets the rest go grey makes a version of the same call, at the level of a single instalment rather than a whole run.

Does it print well?

Very — a ruled grid with a small number of solid-filled cells is about as durable a pattern as exists on cotton, because every edge in it is already a straight line.

Keep the fill colour to one flat ink against the outline colour; a gradient or a second accent inside the filled cells will muddy at this cell size. Bold, simple shapes are what actually survive weave and washing, and a filled square is about as simple as a shape gets.
