The bands that prove the page never moved

The bands didn't move the page. They only stopped the machine from writing on it for a moment.
Why does the text disappear in stripes instead of smudging or tearing?
Because nothing physical happened to the page — the writing simply paused.
A fax is written line by line, in step with whatever is coming down the line at that instant. When the connection goes quiet for a stretch, the receiving machine has nothing to put down, so it puts down nothing: a clean band, not a smear. A smear or a tear would mean something touched the paper. This is the opposite — an absence with a hard edge on both sides, because the pause itself had a hard edge.
That is a different kind of fault from a scratch or a stain. Damage marks the paper. This marks a silence in a call, and the paper is only where the silence happens to show up.
Why does the type come back exactly where it was before the band?
Because the page itself never moved for the whole length of the call.
A paper jam shifts everything downstream of it — the rest of the document arrives skewed, or on top of itself, and register never recovers. A dropped line does the opposite: the sheet sits still in the machine the entire time, and when the signal returns, the same page keeps going under the same head, picking the pattern back up exactly where the count left off. Register is the proof that the fault was in the connection and not in the paper.
The same distinction is what separates this from a page pulled through a scanner a few degrees off square — that one is the paper's own alignment failing. Here the paper is faultless throughout; only the line was quiet.
What do the different band heights record?
How long the connection was quiet for, second by second.
A single fixed defect — a scratch, a torn corner — looks the same no matter how long you stare at it. These bands don't: a short one is a quick dropout, a tall one is a longer one, and reading down the sheet is reading a rough transcript of a phone line's bad afternoon. It's the only information the fault leaves behind about itself, and it's the most interesting thing on the page.
Who owns a page like this?
Nobody. PAGE 2 OF 2 names no sender, no company and no case — it was written for the design and identifies nothing real.
A real transmitted page belongs to whoever sent it, the way any document does, and if one specific real fax is the point — a particular firm's header, a particular case number — clearing it is part of the job; senders and firms license their material like anyone else. Where no real page is the point, the invented one is better anyway: a header that names nothing lets the wearer supply the rest of the story. Style has no owner. A work does.
Isn't a blank band just missing information?
Less than it looks. Most of the page survives whole, and what's removed is removed cleanly rather than blurred across everything.
Compare it with toner running thin across an entire corner of a page: that fault degrades gradually and takes a whole region down with it, letters breaking into fragments before they vanish. A dropped line does none of that softening. Either a line was written in full or it wasn't written at all — there's no in-between state on this page, which is part of why it reads as a record rather than as damage.
Does this happen with anything other than a fax?
Yes, wherever a mark or a signal is written in real time and the connection carrying it goes quiet for a moment: a wire feed, a live subtitle track, a ticket printer mid-order.
What has to hold is the pairing this print is built on — a break with a hard edge on both sides, and perfect continuity across it. Somewhere in the same office, a laminated notice is recording light instead of a phone line, holding still for years the way this page held still for one call.
Does it print well?
Yes, and it wants almost no palette at all.
The original is one ink on paper — near-black type on a pale ground — and the print keeps that discipline: a single dark ink on bone, cream or a pale warm grey. The bands themselves are the easiest part, since they're just the garment colour left unprinted; the type wants to run coarse and dense rather than genuinely legible, because legibility was never the point and fine hairline type closes up in the weave. PAGE 2 OF 2 is the one line drawn cleanly, so it survives at reading size against everything else.
Charcoal on bone, or near-black on a faded navy, both hold the same hard-edged split.
