What a flash does to everything it doesn't hit

The flash didn't fail. It did exactly what it was built to do.

Why does the background disappear completely instead of just going dark?

Because a flash has a range, and past that range a camera simply records nothing.

A built-in flash throws light a few metres and no further — it doesn't dim gradually into shadow, it stops. Anything inside that range gets lit, sometimes too much; anything past it gets none of the light at all, and none of the light means none of the information. The black isn't an absence of detail. It's the camera correctly reporting that no light came back from out there.

Why do the shadows fall directly behind the two figures?

Because that's where a flash mounted on the camera itself throws them — straight back, hard-edged, onto whatever's closest.

A flash sitting an inch above the lens casts light from almost exactly where the photograph is being taken from, which means every shadow it makes falls directly away from the camera, onto the nearest wall, with an edge as hard as the light that made it. It's the single most recognisable signature of an on-camera flash — nobody diffused it, nobody bounced it off a ceiling, it just went straight out and straight back.

Why are the two figures blown out instead of properly lit?

Because they were standing closer to the flash than the room was built to be lit for.

A flash calculates one exposure for one rough distance, and two people a couple of metres from the lens are usually much closer than the far wall the room needed light to reach. The result is foreground faces pushed past white — no interior detail left, just the outline of a person holding the shape of a face — while the room behind them, further from the flash, stays comparatively dark or vanishes altogether.

Why two figures rather than one

Do I need permission to print a photograph like this?

Only for a real, identifiable person — and even then, it's a matter of asking, not clearing rights.

Both figures here are plain featureless silhouettes, so there's nobody's likeness in the design to license in the first place. A real flash photograph from your own camera is simpler still: a photograph belongs to whoever took it, and in a family album that's usually somebody you can ask directly — the same way a badly composed shot with the photographer's own thumb in the corner still just belongs to whoever took it.

Does this work for a photograph with more than two people in it?

It does, though a flash photograph of a larger group usually needed more than one attempt to land.

Getting a whole group properly lit and looking the same way at once was already its own difficulty before a single hard flash was added on top of it — the people nearest the camera blow out first, and the ones at the back can vanish into the same black the room does. Two figures is close to the largest a single flash comfortably handles without losing somebody at either end.

Isn't a photograph this blown out just a mistake worth fixing?

Only if the point was the room. If the point is the flash, this is what the flash actually looked like.

Recovering the blown-out fronts and lifting the black background would produce a technically better photograph of a room that never looked like this to the eye — the room was probably lit normally, and only the picture is like this. Fixing it removes the one piece of evidence that a flash, not daylight, made the photograph, which is the entire reason it looks the way it does.

Does it print well?

Yes — hard black and blown-out white are two of the simplest tones fabric printing can hold, since neither needs any gradient to read correctly.

The black background prints as solid ink rather than a fade, and the blown-out fronts print as the garment colour showing through rather than as ink at all, so the contrast that makes the flash legible survives the weave without softening. Black or near-black cotton is what actually lets that trick work — the unprinted areas read as the same dark the photograph already has. One or two inks covers it: the wedge of light in a flat mid tone, the shadows in solid black.
