The middle setting on a pushchair isn't a second seat

The frame is identical in all three drawings. Only what's clipped onto the back of it changes.
What's actually different between the three configurations?
Almost nothing on the frame itself — the difference is entirely in what's attached to a set of mounting points that were built in from the start.
1 is the pushchair as most people picture it, sold and used as a single seat for however long
that's all a household needs. 2 is the same frame carrying a second full seat, front to back
rather than side by side. 1+1, the one in the middle, is neither — it's the base frame with a
small board bolted where a second seat would eventually go, built to be stood on rather than sat in.
Why does 1+1 get its own drawing instead of being folded into 1 or 2?
Because it isn't a smaller version of either — it's a genuinely different way of moving two children, one riding and one standing, and it's usually the configuration that gets used the longest.
A second full seat assumes a second child who still needs to be strapped in and pushed the whole way. A standing board assumes a child who can hold on, balance, and get off and walk part of the distance under their own power — closer to what a pair of shoes with an opinion attached to them is also about, a child's own capability overtaking whatever the household had already planned around. That's a real capability, not a smaller seat, which is why the middle drawing earns its own label rather than sitting as a footnote to the other two.
Was the frame designed to take a second child, or is this a workaround somebody found?
Designed for it. The mounting points that hold the board in 1+1 and the second seat in 2 are
built into the frame that ships as 1 — they're just unused hardware on a single-seat pushchair
until a household needs them.
That's the detail the three drawings are making, side by side: nothing changes about the frame between them. A pushchair bought for one child was engineered, from the factory, to become transport for two, in the same way a cot brought back down from storage was always going to be reused rather than sold — the household just hadn't needed to find that out yet.
Does anyone need permission to print a pushchair's own configuration diagram?
No. A frame drawn generically, with no manufacturer's badge, model name or logo attached, isn't reproducing anybody's proprietary design — a three-wheeled or four-wheeled pushchair frame with a seat, a board, and a second seat is a description of a mechanism, not a copy of one company's part.
If a specific brand's exact shape or badge were the point, that would be a different design and a different question, worth checking with the manufacturer first. Drawn plainly, as three configurations of one anonymous frame, there's nothing here that belongs to anyone in particular.
What does the third configuration cost that the first two don't?
Width, mostly, and turning radius. Two seats front to back makes the whole unit noticeably longer,
which changes what doorways, shop aisles and lifts it fits through, in ways 1 and 1+1 don't.
That's part of why 1+1 holds on for so long in practice rather than getting swapped straight for
2 — a board adds almost nothing to the frame's footprint, while a second full seat changes what
the household can get the pushchair into. The arrows between the three drawings aren't a straight
upgrade path; each one trades something specific for something else.
Does the same three-stage logic apply to other things a household buys for one child and grows into two?
It's the same shape as a car's middle seat, alternated by an unwritten rota rather than fixed to one child — equipment or arrangements built with headroom for a number that isn't there yet, used at less than capacity until it suddenly is. What's specific to the pushchair is that the headroom is a physical, load-bearing bracket rather than a habit.
Does it print well?
Yes — three identical frame outlines in one flat colour, distinguished only by the small attachments and the arrows between them, is a clean line-work print with nothing that needs shading.
Keep the frame the exact same line weight across all three drawings so the repetition reads clearly,
and keep 1, 1+1 and 2 in plain block type rather than a decorative font — the labels are doing
real work here, not decoration. One ink on navy, in white or pale grey, is enough for the whole set.
