What is an amplifier settings diagram recording?
The exact position of every knob, drawn rather than measured.
An amp panel has no digital readout — a knob just points somewhere between two marks, and the only way to record where is to draw the angle. Six pointers at six specific angles is the entire specification of a sound: change any one of them and it's a different amp, even with the same gear plugged into the same room.
Why draw the angles instead of writing the numbers?
Because most amps were never built with numbers on them at all.
A dial has marks, not a scale — no "7", just a line and a gap either side of it. Angle is the only information there actually is, so a diagram that draws each pointer's position is recording exactly as much as the amp itself displays. A written number would be inventing precision the knob never had.
What makes the arrow to the middle knob the detail people argue about?
Everyone agrees the note matters. Nobody agrees why it's pointing at that one.
Five other knobs are set and drawn with no comment at all. Singling out the mid control implies it was the one that mattered most, or the one that had drifted, or the one nobody could believe worked at that setting — and the diagram doesn't say which. That's the gap a reader fills in themselves, which is most of why the detail sticks.
Why the note reads as anxious rather than proud
Do not move isn't a boast about a good sound. It's someone who got there by trial and doesn't
trust the process to repeat, writing an instruction to their future self as much as to anyone else
in the room.
Can it show a real amplifier's actual control layout?
The layout itself, generally not without asking — the panel design belongs to the manufacturer.
An amp's control panel is an industrial design in its own right, and a well-known one is recognisable from the knob spacing and lettering alone, which is exactly the kind of distinctive design that stays with its maker. A drawn panel that borrows the idea — six labelled knobs, a pointer angle for each — without copying a specific manufacturer's actual artwork keeps the diagram about the recorded sound rather than about somebody else's product design.
Does this format work outside music?
Anywhere a setting was found once through trial and the person is afraid of losing it.
An annotated hardware diagram carries the same tension — a panel drawn and marked up because whoever did it wasn't confident they'd get a second attempt. A kiln's firing schedule, a mixing desk's channel settings for one specific take, a thermostat somebody labelled after months of guessing: all the same instinct.
Isn't a diagram of dial positions a strange thing to want printed?
Only if the sound it records didn't matter to somebody.
To a stranger, six lines at six angles are just a pattern. To the person who spent an evening getting there, it's the only surviving copy of a decision that can't be written down any other way — closer to a recipe than a specification, and just as easy to lose.
Does it print well?
Yes — pointer lines and lettering are close to ideal print material.
Six radiating lines inside circles and plain lettering underneath are the kind of flat, bold shapes that survive fabric printing at almost any size. The one thing worth widening slightly is the pointer lines themselves — very fine lines can fill in on fabric, so each one drawn a touch thicker than the original keeps the angle readable. Charcoal, slate and a deep bottle green all suit the diagram. Two inks: one for the panel, scarlet for the note.
