What does a straight, unbroken scratch actually prove?

That whatever caused it stayed still while the film moved past it.

A scratch that ran diagonally, or wandered frame to frame, would mean the film and the fault were moving together, or moving differently on different passes. A line that stays fixed at the same point through thousands of frames means one thing: something in the machine — a burr, a piece of grit lodged in the gate — held its position, and the film did all the travelling. The straightness isn't a stylistic choice. It's the proof.

How is a scratch different from a splice, as a mark?

A scratch records a machine. A splice records a person.

A splice sits at one point on the reel, cut at an angle, with two damaged sprocket holes marking exactly where someone joined two pieces of film — it's a single, deliberate repair. A scratch runs the length of a reel, repeating identically thousands of times a second, with no deliberate act behind any one instance of it. One is a record of a decision. Why does the audience blame the film rather than the projector?

Because the flaw shows up on the one surface everyone in the room is actually looking at.

Nothing about how it looks tells the audience where it came from. It reads as a mark on the film they're watching, not as a fault in the metal the film is passing through, even though the metal is where the line actually started — the same way the cropped edge of the picture is decided by a plate nobody in the audience ever sees, not by the film itself.

Why is the strip drawn with no image on it?

Because the scratch is the entire content, and a picture underneath it would compete for attention.

Can I use a scratch pattern like this freely?

Yes. A hairline scratch isn't authored artwork — it's a physical mark left by contact between film and metal, and no scratch pattern belongs to anyone. Sprocket holes and frame lines are a shared technical format, the same way a fishing line's weight markings or a set of ruled staves are.

What would need permission is any actual picture drawn inside the frames — a specific scene, a specific title. This design leaves the frames empty, so there's nothing to trace back to anybody.

Does it print well?

Yes, and simply. A single continuous hairline against flat colour is about as clean a print as exists — hard-edged, high-contrast, nothing fine to lose in the weave except the line itself, which should be kept crisp and unbroken rather than textured or broken into dashes.

Dusty blue, slate or a worn charcoal ground suit it. One ink for the frame structure, one for the scratch — keep the scratch the lighter of the two so it reads as light catching a groove.
