The sharpest image in the building has no audience
A geometric test card is projected to an empty room before a single ticket is sold, and everything the audience later sees sharp owes something to that unseen picture.

Nested rectangles, a crosshair in the centre, four small star-shaped marks set into the corners, and six blocks of fine parallel lines at different spacings. No numbers anywhere on it, no labels, nothing that says what any of it means.
It's the most carefully engineered image in the building, and it was never made to be watched.
What is a focus card, and why does it look like that?
A test chart projected onto an empty screen so the image can be sharpened before an audience ever sits down.
Every mark on it does a job. The nested rectangles confirm the picture is landing inside the frame correctly. The crosshair marks the centre. The blocks of parallel lines are a resolution test — lines drawn close enough together that they blur into grey once the focus is even slightly off, so the eye can tell exactly when the image is as sharp as the machine can make it.
Why does the pattern repeat in the corners as well as the centre?
Because a lens that's sharp in the middle can still be soft at the edges, and a card that only tested the centre would miss exactly the fault that matters most.
Corner sharpness is where cheap optics and careless alignment show first — a picture can look perfectly focused in the middle of the screen and visibly soft a few feet from it. Testing all four corners against the centre, in one pass, is how the whole frame gets confirmed even, not just the part an eye lands on first.
What makes the line-pair blocks work as a test?
Their spacing does the entire job — no measurement is needed, just a look.
Each block groups a set of thin parallel lines at a fixed distance apart. In focus, the lines stay distinct down to the finest set. Out of focus, the tightest lines blur into flat grey first, and the coarser sets follow. Reading which block has gone soft tells a trained eye how far out the focus is and in which direction to correct it — a legible measurement made entirely of geometry.
Doesn't a test pattern belong to whoever made the equipment?
The specific geometry on a manufacturer's own chart belongs to them, but the idea of a resolution test — nested marks, graduated line pairs — is a shared convention, not a single owner's artwork.
Drawn fresh, with no maker's mark, no model number and no branding anywhere on it, this design borrows the idea of a focus card rather than reproducing anybody's specific chart. Same distinction as everywhere on this site: a fixed rectangle cropping a frame follows the same logic, plate to plate.
Does it work as a print if you've never used a projector?
Yes — it reads as precise, deliberate geometry even without the technical context.
The symmetry and the graduated line blocks carry visual interest on their own, the way any well-built diagram does. Knowing it's a focus card adds a layer, but the design doesn't depend on the viewer already having that knowledge, any more than a pair of drapes closing on a blank screen needs a caption to read as motion.
Who is this actually a good shirt for?
Anybody who works with a lens, a screen or a stage for a living — camera operators, projectionists, lighting and AV technicians, the same audience standing in front of a perforated screen with the room's actual speakers behind it.
It reads as an in-joke for that specific group and as clean abstract geometry for everyone else, which is a useful combination: it doesn't need explaining to be worn, but it rewards recognition when it lands.
Does it print well?
Very well — it's built entirely from hard-edged geometric shapes, close to ideal for fabric.
The finest line-pair blocks are the one place to watch: below a certain spacing, lines this close together fill in on cotton and read as a grey smudge rather than a pattern. Widening the tightest block slightly, and keeping everything else as drawn, lets the whole card survive print cleanly.
Bone, oatmeal and pale grey grounds keep the geometry legible. Two or three inks — one dark line colour, one accent for the crosshairs — is plenty.
