Why are the shapes solid painted blocks instead of thin outlines?

Because a solid block is what still reads from across a shed; a thin outline mostly doesn't.

A shape sketched as a line drawing needs somebody close enough, and paying enough attention, to trace its edge. A block of flat colour registers the instant it enters your field of view, the same way a road sign works before you can read the word on it. When the actual tool hangs in front of its shape, the colour is covered and invisible; the moment it's lifted off the hook, the block shows again. The shape isn't decoration around where the tool lives — it's the part of the system that does the reporting.

How does a painted board show a missing tool without anyone consulting a list?

Because the row itself is the list, and an empty space in it reads at a glance rather than requiring a comparison.

Checking a shelf against a written inventory means holding two things in your head at once — what's actually there, and what's supposed to be — and comparing them item by item. A shadow board collapses that into one look: painted shape means gone, tool means present, and the two states are visually different enough that nobody has to think about which is which. The one stair that always creaks works on a similar shortcut — a signal built into the object itself, doing a job that would otherwise need someone paying deliberate attention.

Why are only four of the ten shapes labelled?

Because those four have an outline something else in the row could plausibly be mistaken for.

A saw's shape can still be confused with a different saw; a brace looks enough like a hand drill from a few paces off to earn a name under it; shears and pliers, a trowel and a small spade, sit close enough in silhouette that a label settles it in one glance instead of two. The square, the hammer, the fork — each of those has an outline nothing else on the board shares, so a name under it would be telling you something you can already see.

Does painting a row of common tool shapes raise any ownership question?

No. The outline of a saw or a hammer is a generic form, not anyone's design.

Nobody holds a claim over the shape of a chisel or the general profile of a garden fork — those outlines are as old as the tools themselves and belong to the trade, not to a manufacturer. What would need clearing is a specific maker's branding painted alongside the shape: a logo, a model name stencilled on. Left as plain silhouettes with generic labels, as here, none of that applies.

Does the same idea work for a kitchen, a desk or a van?

Yes — the row just changes to whatever set of objects actually goes missing from that particular surface.

A kitchen version runs to a rolling pin, a whisk, a particular knife; a desk to a stapler, a specific pair of scissors, a hole punch; a van to whatever tends to get left on a job site and not come back. The way a child lines objects up by size before anyone asks them to is a related, earlier version of the same instinct — order as its own kind of check.

Isn't it obvious when a tool is missing without going to this trouble?

Not from a doorway, at a glance, across a cluttered shed — which is exactly the situation this board is built for.

A tool leaning somewhere else, a hook with nothing hanging on it among twenty other hooks: none of that stands out on its own. A block of yellow paint with nothing covering it does. The board doesn't make the tool easier to find later — it makes its absence impossible to miss the moment you walk in, which is a different and earlier kind of useful.

Does a row of flat painted silhouettes print well on a shirt?

Yes — hard-edged solid shapes are exactly the kind of print that survives the weave cleanly.
