The tread that doesn't match, on purpose

What is printed on these soles?
A pair of shoes, drawn from underneath, where the two halves of each sole clearly came from different places.
The forefoot keeps a shallower, evenly spaced ring pattern — the kind a factory mould presses out by the thousand. The heel has been replaced with something coarser and deeper cut, its ribs running on the diagonal instead of in rings. Between the two, a plain horizontal strip marks exactly where one tread stops and the other starts.
Why put two completely different treads on one sole?
Because that's what happens when a heel wears through before the rest of the shoe does.
A heel takes more impact per step than a forefoot, so it's usually the first part of a sole to go. Replacing just the worn section with whatever offcut is at hand — here, a strip cut from a tyre — keeps the shoe walking without matching its geometry to the factory original. The mismatch isn't a mistake in the drawing; it's the shape a real repair takes.
Why does the seam between the two treads matter?
Because a seamless repair would erase the thing worth printing.
A cobbler focused purely on function could feather the new tread into the old one until nobody could tell where the patch started. Leaving the join as a visible, flat band does the opposite: it says the fix isn't hidden and doesn't need to be. A patch you can see is proof the shoe kept walking after the factory tread gave out, which is a better story than a sole nobody had to touch.
Why view the shoes from underneath rather than from the side?
Because the side of a shoe looks the same whether it's been resoled or not — the sole is where the whole story is.
A profile view of the pair would show two ordinary shoes and nothing about what's happened to them. Flipping the view to the sole puts the repair itself where the print can use it, the same reasoning that puts one object at the centre of a print instead of a wider scene. Printed across the full back, mirrored left and right, it reads at a distance the way a real footprint would.
Is copying a real tyre tread pattern like this legally fine?
Better handled as an invented pattern, which is what this one is.
A specific manufacturer's tread design can be protected as trade dress, not just as a trademark on the sidewall lettering — tyre makers have defended distinctive tread geometry in court before. An invented rib pattern that reads as "tyre" without matching any one maker's actual mould sidesteps that entirely, and leaving the whole print free of lettering removes the easiest way a design like this ends up naming a brand by accident — the same reason an invented registration mark clears a drone print that a real manufacturer's markings wouldn't.
Does the patched-repair idea work on things other than shoes?
Yes — any worn object fixed with material scavenged from somewhere else carries the same idea.
A bicycle tyre boot cut from an old inner tube, a bag strap replaced with webbing that doesn't match, a tool handle rebuilt from a different wood: the print works wherever two visibly different materials meet at a clean line, because one of them gave out first and the other was what was available.
Does it print well?
Yes — two flat tread patterns and a hard dividing line are exactly what a limited palette handles well, and there's no lettering to size or crop.
The concentric forefoot pattern reproduces cleanly as fine, evenly spaced rings; the heel's ribs need to stay bold and widely spaced so they don't fill in against the dark ground. Straw yellow against graphite or black gives the contrast the print depends on with just two inks. Charcoal, graphite or true black all suit the base — anything dark enough that the yellow tread stays the one bright element on the shirt.
