Nobody built this on purpose. It arrived one cable at a time, over years, and stayed.

Why does a tangle like this form in the first place?

Because each cable arrived on its own, solving one problem at the moment it was plugged in, with nobody responsible for how it sat next to the cable before it.

A new machine comes into the house, its lead gets run to the nearest free socket by whoever set it up that afternoon, and it's threaded through or over whatever's already back there because pulling everything out to start again is a bigger job than anyone wants that day. Repeat that nine or ten times across however many machines have passed through, and the result isn't mess in the sense of neglect — it's accretion, one reasonable decision layered on the last.

What are the three dead plugs actually evidence of?

Equipment that left the house while its cable didn't.

A machine gets replaced or given away and its lead, still connected to a socket further up the tangle, simply gets left where it is — pulling one cable out means finding it in the knot first, and finding it means committing to untangling more than anyone's prepared to that evening. A dead plug is sediment: proof a specific machine was here once, outliving the machine itself by years, identifiable to nobody now but still occupying its place in the knot.

What is the switch box doing in the middle of it?

Arbitrating between machines that all want the same television at the same time.

Before a set could show more than one input at once, something had to decide which machine's signal actually reached the screen, and a small box with a lever was the household's answer — flip it one way for one machine, the other way for another. It sits at the physical centre of the tangle because every cable that matters routes through it, which makes it the one piece of this knot anyone could still explain the function of on request. It's the back-of-house version of the same contest that a front room's floor plan settles out front — one screen, several machines with a claim on it, one small piece of hardware doing the deciding.

Why does nobody untangle it?

Because sorting it means finding out, cable by cable, which lead does what — and the risk of guessing wrong and losing a working picture outweighs whatever's gained by tidying a space nobody but the person moving the television ever looks at.

The tangle works. Every cable that's still connected to something is still doing its job, dust and all. Reorganising it would mean unplugging things that currently function on the chance of reconnecting them correctly afterward, and being the person who did that and got it wrong is a specific kind of blame nobody in the house wants to be holding.

Who owns the cables and the box?

The individual leads and the switch box are generic manufactured hardware, made by whoever manufactures cabling, with no branding, screen or logo drawn anywhere in this image — there's nothing here that belongs to a specific company's registered design.

What's actually being described isn't any one cable but the arrangement all of them ended up in together, which is entirely the household's own, unrepeatable accretion. Nobody else's tangle grew in exactly this order or has exactly these three dead ends in it.

Does this only happen behind a television?

No — anywhere machines get added to a room one at a time over years, without anybody ever being assigned to keep the connections tidy, produces the same layered mess: a fuse box with taped-off circuits for appliances long gone, a garage extension lead run to a socket nobody remembers installing.

A drawer of keys that open nothing is the same accumulation in a different material — objects that outlived their function and stayed anyway because removing them felt riskier than keeping them. The knowledge of which specific cartridge angle worked on which machine, meanwhile, is a different kind of household memory entirely — a technique rather than a residue.

Does it print well?

Yes — fine, unshaded pen lines are close to ideal for fabric, since every cable stays a clean, countable line rather than a shaded mass.

Keep the crossings clear rather than letting lines merge into a solid tangle of ink — the drawing works because you can trace one cable from end to end if you look, even inside a dense knot, and that legibility disappears the moment lines start touching without a visible gap. The dust wants to stay a light texture along the top edges only, not spread across the whole image.

Slate, charcoal or a deep grey ground suit the flat pen-line look. One ink carries the whole thing.
