You could follow the whole game without the screen

One person in the house never watched the screen and still knew which level, which fight, whether it was going well — from sound alone, through a wall, for years.

Nobody in that second room was watching. They still knew exactly what was happening.

What does this plan actually record?

That the light and the sound from one television didn't travel the same distance, and somebody was positioned to catch the one that did.

The wedge of light stops close to the doorway; the arcs keep going. A person sitting in the second room, past where the light reaches, was inside a broadcast that had nothing to do with seeing anything. That's not a failure of the room's layout — it's the actual range of a games machine, and somebody used it.

Is following a game by ear a real skill?

Yes, and it's a specific one: reading a machine's own sound design as information rather than as atmosphere.

A change in tempo, a particular stinger, a long silence where there's usually noise — each of those means something to whoever has heard them enough times, the way a kitchen sound tells a cook what's happening in a pan they can't see. Nobody sets out to learn this. It arrives from years of being in the next room while somebody else played.

Why is the person sitting well back from the light, and not near the doorway?

Because listening from a distance was the arrangement, not a compromise on the way to a better seat.

The square in this plan isn't drawn edging toward the doorway to see more. It's set back, inside where the sound reaches and the light doesn't — a fixed position, not a person caught halfway between two rooms. That's a decision about where to be, made by someone who wasn't trying to watch.

Why draw the arcs and not a person listening?

Because arcs are the closest a floor plan gets to rendering a sense the format wasn't built for.

A plan is a visual language — walls, doorways, furniture — built for a sense that isn't the one doing the work here. Five concentric rings are the closest a line drawing gets to sound without turning into a diagram of sound waves in a physics textbook; kept plain, they read as this reached further than the light did, which is the entire point.

How is this different from watching from the room itself?

Watching still needs the screen. This piece is about the version of the game that travelled without it — the empty chair in the same room as the television belongs to somebody who chose not to hold the controller and still watched; the person on the far side of a wall never had that option and built the same familiarity a different way.

Does this only work for games, or for any noise a household made?

Any regular sound a house produced travels this way — a games machine is one case of a much older pattern.

A workshop through a floor, a radio through a ceiling, a kettle in another room: all of them let somebody build a picture of what's happening without seeing it. So does a gig heard from outside the venue rather than inside it — a different distance from the same source, still legible. The games machine version is distinct only in how legible its sound design is — it was built to communicate state on purpose, which is why it's the sharpest example of the pattern rather than the only one.

Where was the television that all this sound was coming from?

Fixed in the room next door, on the same stand, in the same negotiated position described in the plan of the front room the set actually lived in. This piece is that room's sound reaching somewhere the argument over seating never had to.

Who has a claim on a scene like this?

Nobody — two rooms, a wall and a doorway aren't anyone's intellectual property, and neither is the fact that sound crosses a threshold light doesn't.

If the piece specified a real machine's actual sound effects, that would be somebody's recorded work and would need clearing. This plan stops well short of that: a rectangle standing for a television, arcs standing for sound in general. There's nothing here that belongs to a publisher.

Does it print well?

Yes — a single luminous fill against flat ink blue is a strong, simple print.

The arcs and the light wedge are the only two elements carrying tone, so keeping everything else as hard, flat line work lets them read clearly at a distance. Two values is enough: the plan in ink blue, the light and sound picked out in one warmer fill.
