The button that never had to match anything

An old tin of buttons kept from every finished or discarded garment, tipped open on the chest, with one pale button that was never sewn to anything at all.

Nobody sorted this. It got fuller, is all.

What is in a tin like this?

Two different kinds of button, doing two different jobs.

Most of what is in there came off something — a shirt taken apart for its fabric, a coat that wore through before its buttons did, a cardigan that shrank past wearing. Cutting the buttons off first is automatic, the same reflex that saves a zip pull or a length of good elastic before the rest goes in the bin. The rest never came off anything at all: spares sold loose with a new garment, sewn to a swing tag or dropped in the bag, kept because throwing away a free spare feels wrong even with no plan for it.

Why does a tin like this never get sorted by size or colour?

Because sorting has an end point, and adding to the tin doesn't.

Matching a shirt button takes one trip through the tin, and the trip is quick even in a jumble — the search is for one specific size, one hole count, one shank or no shank, and everything else is disqualified at a glance. Sorting the whole tin into rows would only pay off if it got opened often enough to be worth the hour, and a button tin gets opened maybe twice a year. The mess isn't neglect. It's correctly not worth fixing.

What makes a button worth keeping in the first place?

Whether it could plausibly close something again, not whether it matches anything already in the tin.

A four-hole bone button off a school shirt duplicates a hundred others already in there and gets kept anyway, because a spare shirt button is needed constantly and a specific brown coat toggle is needed maybe never. Hole count and shank type sort a button by what it could fasten, which is a different axis entirely from what it looks like — which is how a tin ends up holding two buttons that are visually identical and structurally useless to each other, and two more that clash completely and are the only pair that will work on the same coat.

Is there a rights question with a tin of ordinary buttons?

Rarely, but not never.

Buttons cut off an ordinary shirt or coat carry nobody's name — the shape belongs to whoever pressed the mould, not to the wearer, and drawing a plain two-hole button is not drawing anybody's mark. A button stamped with a house crest or a regimental design is a different object, and stamping one on a print the way a zip pull swapped for the wrong colour carries its own hardware would need the same permission any branded piece needs. Plain buttons don't carry that risk.

Does this work for other small kept things, or is a button tin specific?

The shape works for anything saved in a pile rather than a system — a jar of screws, a tin of odd batteries, a drawer of keys to doors that don't exist any more. What makes the button tin particular is that every piece in it used to be attached to something, the way a safety pin promoted to a permanent fastening is still, technically, spare parts doing a full-time job.

Isn't it simpler to just buy a card of matching buttons?

For one garment, yes. For the next thirty years of garments, no.

A card of six matching buttons solves exactly one repair and is the wrong size, colour or hole count for the next one. A tin built up over years covers more cases precisely because it was never bought to solve any single job — it's inventory that grew by accident and turned out more useful than anything bought on purpose would have been.

Does it print well?

Yes — it's a flat, high-contrast collection with a genuinely closed palette.

Bone against a rust-red garment reads clean at any size, and the single faded teal needs to stay distinct rather than drifting toward either the bone or the background — a garment already close in value to one of the print colours is the case worth avoiding. Keep every button's outline crisp; this is a print made of many small hard shapes, and softening the edges to look aged would make them read as smudges instead of buttons.
