Nobody sorted this line for the sake of it looking tidy. They sorted it so unloading it wouldn't be a second job.

Why does the washing go up grouped by type instead of straight from the basket?

Because the line is loaded to match how it's going to come back down — the order things go up in is the order they'll need folding, so grouping now means not sorting twice.

Pegged in whatever order they came out of a wet basket, the same items still need separating into piles before folding starts — towels here, shirts there, socks somewhere else. Grouped on the line first, the separating has already happened by the time anything's dry. Unloading and folding collapse into one pass instead of two.

Why does the ordering actually save real work rather than just look neater?

Because it moves the sorting to the point where it costs almost nothing — pegging one more item next to its own kind takes no longer than pegging it anywhere else on the line.

Nothing about the sun or the wind cares what order the pegs go in. What the order changes is entirely downstream: whether the person unloading the line walks straight into folding, or has to build three piles from a jumbled one first. The saving is invisible to anyone except whoever does that second job, which is exactly why it's easy to mistake for fussiness by anyone who's never had to sort a tangled basket themselves.

Does a washing line print well across the back of a shirt?
