The holes get bigger towards the rim for a reason
A watering can rose grades its holes from small at the centre to large at the rim, which is what lets the spray land evenly across the whole spread underneath it.

Nobody drilled those holes the same size. Uneven is the entire point.
What is a watering can rose actually doing to the water?
Turning one jet into a spread that lands like light rain instead of a single stream that digs a hole in the compost.
Water leaves the spout under pressure, and the rose's job is to break that pressure into hundreds of small, slow exits rather than one fast one. Get the holes right and a can that would otherwise blast a seedling flat instead settles over a whole tray or a whole row at once, gently enough that nothing underneath moves.
Why do the holes get bigger towards the rim rather than staying the same size?
Because pressure inside the rose isn't even, and the holes have to compensate for that.
Water pushes hardest directly under the spout, at the centre of the disc, and falls off towards the edges the further it has to travel sideways to get there. Equal holes would let the centre gush and the rim merely weep. Grading the holes larger as they move outward corrects for the drop in pressure, so the amount landing per hole is close to the same wherever it sits on the disc — a fluid problem solved with a punch rather than a valve.
What's the difference between a fine rose and a coarse one?
How much each individual drop weighs, which is a decision about what's underneath it.
A fine rose, with smaller holes right across the disc, suits seedlings and anything freshly sown — a heavy drop can knock a seed sideways or bury it. A coarse rose, larger holes throughout, moves more water faster onto established plants that don't mind how hard a drop lands. Both still grade smallest to largest across the disc; what shifts is the whole scale, fine to coarse. It's the same kind of choice as four hoe blades ground to four different working angles — the right one depends on the job in front of it, not on which is the better tool outright.
Who owns the shape of a watering rose?
Nobody owns a grid of graded holes solving a pressure problem — that's a fact about fluids, not a design.
What's owned is a specific maker's rose, sold under a model number and a brand — the way this one carries No 4 on its collar, invented for exactly that reason. A real manufacturer's numbering system and name are licensable the ordinary way, the same as any branded fitting.
Does the same grading trick turn up anywhere else outdoors?
Yes, wherever water has to be spread rather than aimed — a hosepipe sprinkler head, a shower rose indoors, a soaker line with holes that get finer as pressure falls along its length.
Not every fitting on a plot solves the problem this way, though. A water butt's overflow sits at exactly the level past which the water inside it does not rise — a single threshold rather than a gradient. The rose is doing something more delicate: not stopping water at a line, but spreading it unevenly on purpose so it lands evenly.
Isn't a rose just there to stop debris clogging the spout?
Straining is a side effect, not the reason the holes are the size and pattern they are.
A strainer needs holes small enough to catch grit — any even grid would manage that. A rose's holes are sized and placed for a spray pattern first; keeping debris out is a bonus, not the reason they're shaped the way they are. It's closer to a secateur pair whose two blades are built for two different cuts: the visible mechanism is doing one specific job, and anything else it happens to do is a bonus.
Does it print well?
Yes — a disc of graduated dots is exactly the kind of pattern a print process handles cleanly, as long as the smallest holes at the centre don't shrink past what the fabric can hold.
Charcoal carries the disc, the collar and the stamp against pale blue; keep it to the one ink so the gradation reads through size alone rather than through shading. Set the smallest holes no finer than the print's finest line elsewhere, or the centre of the rose will fill in and the whole gradient will read backwards.
