Nobody set that watch by accident. Somebody decided, once, that the true time wasn't the time this watch would show, and kept deciding it every time it needed winding since.
What is this — why does the case back carry a +2 mark?
Because the watch is deliberately wrong by a fixed, known amount, and the mark is a note to whoever winds it next about exactly how wrong.
Set a watch two minutes ahead of the clock everyone else is using and every reading it gives is off by the same margin, in the same direction, every time. The mark isn't decoration — it's the offset written down so it never has to be re-derived or forgotten between one setting and the next.
Why does running fast work at all, when the offset is known?
Because knowing about it and doing the arithmetic in the moment are two different things, and the watch is built to skip the second one.
The whole trick depends on reading the dial and reacting to what it says, not on subtracting two minutes first and reacting to that. A glance at a watch is faster than a glance plus a sum, so in the seconds that matter — leaving the house, catching a door closing — the fast reading gets acted on before the correction ever gets made. Does scratching +2 into a watch case back raise any ownership question?
No — a plain analogue dial with its own printed hour numerals belongs to nobody in particular, and two characters aren't a design anyone can claim.
A specific manufacturer's dial face, typeface and hand shape would belong to that manufacturer; this one copies no particular watch. It's closer to a technical diagram of what a watch is than a portrait of anybody's actual timepiece, and the mark itself is an offset, not a phrase — there's nothing here to license.
Does the same offset work on a device that isn't a wristwatch?
Yes, on anything with a face you glance at rather than read carefully — a kitchen clock, a car dashboard clock, an oven timer.
Any of them can run the same fixed amount ahead for the same reason: the reaction has to beat the correction. It travels less well to a phone, where the true time is one swipe away and the offset gets undone the moment you check anything else on the screen. It's a habit built for a device with exactly one job.
Isn't a watch set wrong on purpose just a form of lying to yourself, since you already know the offset?
No — it works precisely because knowing the number and acting on the reading are different acts, and the habit only asks you to be fast at the second one.
This isn't a case like handwriting that turns out to match a postal specification nobody ever read, where the habit happens to line up with a rule somebody else wrote. There's no authority behind +2. It's arbitrary, self-imposed, and would be hard to defend to anyone who asked why two and not none — which is exactly why it's scratched into the case back rather than left to be re-argued from scratch every time the watch gets wound.
Does it print well?
Yes — a watch face is a dial of hard shapes and ordinary numerals, which is exactly what a fine, single-colour engraved line handles well.
Keep the numerals and hands at one consistent weight so the face reads as a whole instrument rather than a scatter of marks, and hold the case-back inset small and separate rather than crowding it against the dial — it's a footnote to the design, not a second focal point. One ink, bone white on a dark ground, is enough; nothing here needs shading to read.
