It stopped being a fish and became a pattern

Reduced to its scales, a carp becomes a repeat pattern with centuries of use in cloth, tile and armour — no fish required to like it.

What is this actually a picture of?

Nothing in particular — a texture, not a portrait.

Reduce a carp to its outer surface and what's left is rows of overlapping curved plates, a shape people have used across textiles, armour and roof tiles for a very long time without any of them thinking about a fish. A scale pattern turns up wherever a surface needs flexible, overlapping protection, on animals and on buildings alike. The design borrows the shape and drops the creature that grew it.

That's a different move from most of what's near it here — a pike drawn the width of the wearer's own chest puts the whole animal on the shirt at true scale. This one starts from an animal and ends up somewhere else entirely, and the somewhere-else is what's actually on the shirt.

Why does a fish's surface make a good repeat pattern?

Because scales already overlap in a fixed rhythm, which is exactly what a printed repeat needs.

A repeating pattern has one problem to solve regardless of subject: how the edge of one unit meets the next without a seam showing. Scales solve it by construction — each one already overlaps its neighbour on a real fish, so tiling them is closer to copying an existing rule than inventing one. A shoal of identical fish packed edge to edge solves the same seam problem a different way, by repeating a whole animal rather than a fragment of one.

Why does the scale size drift across the print?

Because a perfectly even grid is the one thing that reads as printed rather than grown.

Real scales vary slightly in size across a fish's flank, and a pattern that's mathematically identical everywhere looks unmistakably manufactured rather than organic. The drift is a small, deliberate departure from a perfect grid, and it's doing the opposite of decoration — it's what stops the eye clocking the repeat as a repeat.

Does anyone own a pattern like this?

No — a fish's own surface belongs to nobody, and a pattern derived from it even less so.

Species aren't owned, and shapes taken from them are freer still; a scale pattern has been reused across cultures and centuries precisely because nobody could claim it even if they tried. What is owned is a specific photograph somebody took of real scales, or a specific illustrator's rendering of them — copying either of those directly is a different act from drawing your own version of a shape this old and this common.

Does the same idea work at a smaller scale, on a cuff or a pocket rather than the whole chest?

It works below the whole chest, but there's a floor: shrink it far enough and the scales blur into dots.

At pocket size there are too few scales in frame for the eye to register a repeat at all — it reads as a smudge of gold rather than a surface. The full chest works because there's enough of the pattern in view for the overlap and the drift to be visible as a rule rather than as noise. A single mark built from two shapes and one line survives shrinking in a way this can't, because it needed to be legible as one object, not as a field of them.

Isn't a repeating pattern just wallpaper on a shirt?

It reads that way the moment the repeat becomes obvious, and the size drift is specifically what keeps that from happening.

A pattern that repeats too cleanly announces itself as a printed repeat rather than a surface, which is the wallpaper problem. The size drift, plus the way one scale's edge sits under the curve of the next, breaks the kind of regularity an eye catches at a glance. It still repeats — it's a printed pattern, not a photograph of a real fish — but nothing in it is shouting about it.

Does it print well?

Yes — a pattern built entirely from hard-edged overlapping shapes is one of the more forgiving things to put through a print.

Two tones do the whole job: gold scales and their inner arcs against a deep ground. Bronze, deep teal or black all carry the contrast well. There's no fine hatching and no gradient anywhere in it, so the weave has nothing to lose the design in.
