Why does a band pattern need a join at all?

Because a repeat that runs all the way round rarely divides the circumference evenly, and somewhere the pattern has to reconcile that.

A single repeating unit — one triangle, one hatched block — has a fixed width, and the surface it wraps has a fixed circumference. Those two numbers only line up by coincidence. Almost every band that closes a loop, on skin or on cloth, ends up with a fraction of a repeat left over, and that fraction has to go somewhere.

What are the actual options for where it goes?

Hide it, centre it, or make it a visible feature — those are the three moves, and they produce noticeably different bands.

Hiding it means tucking the seam somewhere the eye is least likely to check, under an arm or against a side seam. Centring it puts the join at the front, on show, dead in the middle of the composition. Making it a feature — what this band does — draws the mismatch deliberately, letting the triangles land a fraction out of alignment rather than disguising it, so the seam reads as part of the pattern's construction instead of a flaw in it.

Why does putting the seam on show read as the stronger choice here?

Because a hidden seam is still there, and a viewer who eventually notices reads it as a mistake that was covered up rather than a mismatch that was always going to exist.

A band drawn to disappear at the join has to keep the illusion up forever — one glance at the wrong angle and the trick shows. A band that puts the join where it can be seen has nothing left to protect: the mismatch was always going to happen, so showing exactly where and how it happens is the more confident drawing, not the more careless one.

Does the whole band have to use this splice-in-view approach?

No — a band can commit fully to hiding the seam or centring it instead, and each is a legitimate finished piece rather than an unfinished version of this one.

A band drawn to disappear at the seam is a different, equally complete choice — the same territory a joint motif works from a different angle, where a rigid pattern has to reconcile itself with a surface that doesn't cooperate with its geometry. What distinguishes this piece is the decision to make that reconciliation visible rather than to solve it away.

Does anyone own a band pattern like interlocking triangles?

No — geometric band motifs are about as shared as a tattoo vocabulary gets, going back further than any single artist working today.

Does this print well, given it has to run off both edges of the artwork?

Yes, and running off the edges is actually the easier version to print, not the harder one.

A band that runs off both sides of the print area doesn't need a finished stopping point drawn in — the artwork's own crop does that work, a different route to the same relief a solid block of colour takes when it runs past the edge of a sleeve. Two flat colours, bone white against the forest green ground, hold the triangles and hatching cleanly; the one thing worth watching is the splice itself, which needs a slightly wider gap than the reference drawing would use, or the two ends print as touching rather than visibly out of step.
