Cut back that far, it still reads as an oak in under a second, which is the test a mark like this has to pass, and most reductions this severe don't.

What is reducing a leaf this far actually testing?

Whether the outline alone, with no surface detail at all, still says "oak" to somebody glancing at it in passing.

Strip away colour variation, texture and shading from most objects and what's left is generic — a rounded shape that could be several different leaves. A mark survives that stripping when the outline itself is doing the identifying work, rather than the detail that's just been removed.

Why does an oak leaf survive that stripping when a lot of leaves wouldn't?

Because the lobes are irregular in a way almost nothing else growing on a tree is.

Many leaves reduce down to a generic pointed oval that could be one of dozens of species. The oak's lobed, rounded, uneven edge is specific enough to survive being flattened to a single silhouette, which is a large part of why it's turned up on coins, badges and cap insignia for centuries — it's one of the few natural shapes that keeps its identity after everything else has been taken away.

What does the acorn add that the leaf alone doesn't?

A second unmistakable shape, so the overlap reads as gathered rather than as one confused object.

An acorn's cap and rounded body sit far enough outside the leaf's own outline — no lobes, no midrib, a different silhouette entirely — that two flat cream shapes stay legible as two separate things even where they touch. Put two similar outlines that close together and they'd merge into a smear; put the leaf against the acorn and the overlap reads as one gathered from the same tree.

Does anyone own the oak as a symbol?

No — the tree and the shape of its leaf belong to nobody.

A great many organisations have used an oak leaf as their own emblem over the years, from conservation charities to armed forces insignia, but what any of them owns is their own specific rendering — a particular drawing, set at a particular angle, in their own colours. The plain shape of an oak leaf and an acorn, drawn fresh, isn't anybody's mark to license.

Does the same reduction trick work on other natural shapes, or is the oak a special case?

It works on any shape whose outline is specific enough to be recognised without its surface detail.

A chanterelle tilted to show its ridged underside is solving a related problem from the opposite direction — enlarging a detail rather than stripping one away, because the underside is what tells a forager which mushroom they're holding. A carved house-and-smoke mark and a field of overlapping carp scales both reduce their subjects hard as well, one down to a single sentence, the other down to a texture.

Wouldn't adding veins make the mark more accurate, so why leave them out?

Because more accuracy here would make it less recognisable, not more.

Veins are fine detail, and fine detail at this scale competes with the outline for attention rather than supporting it — the eye that's supposed to register "oak leaf" in an instant would instead be asked to parse a small botanical illustration. The single midrib is already enough structural information to say which way the leaf is lying; anything past that is drawing for accuracy's own sake, at the cost of the very thing that makes the mark work.

Does it print well?

Yes — a design already reduced to two flat shapes and one line has essentially nothing left to lose in the print.

Cream on olive holds a clean, confident edge with no gradient anywhere to go muddy. A single ink carries the whole design, because nothing in it depends on shading, and the hard-edged lobes and rounded acorn body are exactly the kind of shape that survives the weave without softening.
