A wall of tiny holes is doing the sound's work

Cinema screens are perforated so speakers behind them can fire straight through the picture. This design draws the side of the screen nobody stands on.

Why draw the back of a screen instead of the front?

Because the front is the part everyone already understands.

A cinema screen looks solid from the seats — a flat rectangle catching light, its outer edge set by drapes that close in or open out depending on what's being shown. From behind it's almost the opposite: thousands of small perforations, a taut sheet on a steel frame, and speaker cabinets standing in the dark pointed straight through it. The picture and the sound share the same hole in the wall, and nobody watching ever needs to know that.

What are the perforations actually for?

So sound can travel through the picture instead of around it.

If the speakers sat off to the sides, dialogue would drift away from a mouth moving in the centre of the frame. Putting a cabinet directly behind the screen and perforating the material lets sound pass through at close to full strength, so a voice arrives from wherever the face on screen actually is. The dots are load-bearing, not decorative — a plain sheet would work as a picture and fail as a speaker enclosure's front baffle.

Why does the light glow through the dot grid like that?

Because a projector behind the audience is throwing an image at a surface that isn't opaque.

Some of that light finds every perforation and continues on, spilling into the dark space behind the screen where nobody is meant to be looking. Seen from back there, the picture reads as a soft even glow rather than a photograph — texture and brightness with none of the detail, because the holes are far too small to carry an image through in the other direction.

Why are the cabinets different heights?

Because one screen is doing several jobs the audience never separates.

Behind a single screen a cinema typically runs more than one loudspeaker, spaced across the width rather than stacked in one place, each built for a different part of the job — carrying dialogue, carrying width, carrying the low end that seats can feel as well as hear. Different tasks call for different cabinets, and the mismatch in height is the visible shape of that division of labour.

What makes a good version of this print?

Keeping the frame doing the framing.

The truss is what tells the eye this is architecture rather than a texture sample — without it, a field of dots just reads as noise. A version that drops the frame and keeps only the dot grid loses the joke entirely. The cabinets earn their place too: remove them and it's a diagram of a material, not a picture of a room with a purpose.

Do I need permission to print something like this?

No — a screen's construction and a speaker cabinet's shape are engineering, not authored artwork.

Perforated projection screen and a driver enclosure are both generic industrial forms, built to a function rather than designed to be recognised. Nobody owns the idea of holes in a sheet or a box with a speaker in it. A studio mark, a projector maker's badge or a real venue's name would be a different question — none of those appear here.

Does this work for anyone who isn't into cinema specifically?

It reads fine as pure structure to somebody who's never thought about where movie sound comes from.

The composition — a lit grid, a hard frame, dark shapes standing below it — carries on its own as an image of scaffolding and glow. It sits in a set of rooms built the same way: a test pattern shown to an empty room before anybody buys a ticket, or a single light left on for the whole of the show and never once for the film. Knowing what it is just adds a second layer.

Does it print well?

Yes, once the dot grid is simplified.

A screen's real perforation count is far finer than fabric can hold — reproduced at true density it fills in and reads as grey static. Coarsened to a visible dot pattern with real gaps between each mark, it survives the weave and keeps the glow-through effect. The truss stays as solid hard lines; the cabinets stay flat and dark with no interior detail.

Charcoal or near-black grounds suit the glow-through effect. Two inks: a pale warm tone for the dot field and truss, a flat dark for the cabinets.
