The fan is finished before the first car crosses it

Why is the spread drawn from directly above instead of from the road at eye level?
Because overhead is the angle that shows the shape of the job rather than just the material.
From the road, grit is a scatter of grey grains on tarmac — you'd need to be told what you were looking at, and even then it wouldn't tell you much about how the run was actually done. From above, the pattern the spinner actually lays down becomes visible: a fan with an edge, a density, a width. That fan is the finished product of the run, in the same way a diagonal line is the finished shape a harbour crane actually draws rather than the crate it happened to be lifting.
Why is the fan denser along one edge than the other?
Because the spinner on the back of the vehicle throws to one side, not evenly in both directions.
A gritter isn't a sprinkler. Grit comes off a spinning disc, and a disc throws further and heavier on the side it's rotating toward than the side it's rotating away from — which is why the pattern on the road is a lopsided fan, not a neat triangle centred behind the truck. The asymmetry in the print isn't a stylistic choice. It's what the machine actually does.
Why does the job aim to leave nothing anyone would notice by morning?
Because grit that's still visibly sitting on the road hasn't finished its job yet — it's supposed to have already worked its way into the frost before the first tyre crosses it.
A gritter run happens hours ahead of the cold it's treating, timed off a forecast rather than off what's currently on the ground. Get the timing wrong and the evidence of that mistake is a road that looks exactly the same as a road that was treated correctly, right up until it isn't. Success looks like an ordinary dry commute nobody thinks twice about. The fan on this shirt is the one moment that work is visible at all — laid down in the small hours, then driven, swept, and rained into nothing by the time anyone's awake to see it.
Does anybody own the shape of a grit spread?
No — the pattern a spinner throws is physics, not a design, and belongs to nobody.
A specific council's livery on the truck itself, or a branded fleet marking, is a different matter and licensable the ordinary way if a particular operator is genuinely the point. The fan shape on its own — what any spinner does to any load of grit on any road — isn't anyone's to claim.
Does the same fan shape work for a job other than gritting?
Anything spread from a moving vehicle by a spinning disc leaves a version of the same asymmetric pattern — fertiliser on a field, seed from a drill, salt on a car park.
What changes is the surface underneath and the colour of the material. The lopsided fan itself, one edge heavier than the other, is a mechanical signature of the spinner rather than of the road, so it carries across any of those jobs with the same shape doing the same explaining — a farmer's spread pattern and a gritter's are drawn from the same physics, just a different disc throwing a different load.
Isn't a print with no figure and no words too abstract for a shirt?
The abstraction is the accuracy — a gritter run genuinely has no figure in it, no face, no object you'd recognise, just a pattern thrown across a surface in the dark.
A drawn driver or a drawn truck would turn this into a picture of a vehicle. The fan on its own is a picture of the actual output of the shift — the thing the job produces — the same way a scatter of birds with no drawn sky still reads as a complete scene because the shape carries the whole idea without needing anything else in the frame.
Does the grit fan print well?
Yes, with one condition: the density change has to be built from a field of small marks, not a soft gradient wash.
A true tonal gradient goes muddy and grey on fabric long before it reads as denser here, sparser there. The working version gets the same effect from a scatter of small flat marks — packed tight along the heavy edge, spaced further apart toward the thin edge — which prints as crisp dots at any size instead of a wash that fills in. Pale amber, luminous, on near-black, in one ink, is enough; nothing here needs a second colour.
