Grit works before the frost sets in, not after

Why put grit down before there's any frost to see?

Because grit works by stopping a smooth sheet of ice from forming in the first place, and it's already too late for that job once the surface has frozen solid.

Scattered over a step that's still wet and merely cold, grit breaks the water up into rough patches that can't bond into one continuous, slick layer — each grain becomes a tiny high point that a shoe still catches on even after everything around it freezes. Thrown down after the ice has already set, the same grit is sitting on top of a surface it can no longer get underneath or break apart.

How do you know a frost is actually coming?

Not from a forecast pinned to the wall — from reading the evening directly: a clear sky holding no cloud to trap the day's warmth, air that's gone still, and a temperature that's dropping fast enough by dusk to keep dropping through the night.

Cloud cover acts like a blanket, keeping ground heat from radiating away; a clear, windless evening has nothing holding that heat in, so the coldest, stillest nights are consistently the ones that end in a hard frost by morning. It's a judgment made by stepping outside for a minute, not a number checked on a screen — the same kind of reading that corrects a sowing date once the seedlings prove it wrong, trusting what's actually happening outside over what a fixed date on its own could tell you.

What decides where the grit actually goes?

The parts of the step that get walked on and hold water rather than the whole surface — the centre of the tread, worn smoother by years of feet, is exactly where a film of water collects and exactly where it refreezes first.

Spread evenly, grit runs thin in the one spot it's needed most and wastes itself along edges nobody's foot ever lands on. Piled where the wear pattern already shows the path people actually take does more with less of it.

Whose permission do you need to print a scoop of grit?

Nobody's — putting grit down ahead of a frost isn't a method anyone owns, and the scoop, the tape and the word on it are all generic, with no brand or maker's mark anywhere in the design.

What would need clearing is a specific manufacturer's tool or a stamped logo on the scoop itself. This one carries neither — a plain metal scoop, doing a job that belongs to whoever's holding it.

Does this apply to a step shared with other people, not just your own?

If anything it matters more there — a step used by more than one household is a step where nobody in particular is watching the sky for everyone else, so gritting it ahead of a frost is doing a job that would otherwise fall to whoever happens to slip first.

Isn't it wasted effort if the frost doesn't actually come?

The two ways of being wrong don't cost the same — grit put down for a frost that doesn't arrive gets swept up or washed off within a day or two; a step left ungritted for a frost that does arrive can put someone on the ground before anyone's had a chance to react.

Given that gap, erring toward putting it down costs almost nothing extra most nights, and skips the one night it would have mattered.

Does it print well?

Yes — coarse, individually drawn grains and a hard-edged stone tread are the kind of texture a scraperboard-style cut holds onto without losing definition at print size.

Two inks: bone for the fine white line work and the grain shapes, graphite for the deeper shading in the tread and the scoop. Keep the grains as distinct small shapes rather than a blended texture — the point is that each one is doing its own bit of work underfoot.
